If financing is provided, changes to the church, located on North St. in Port Perry, may be completed as early as next summer. "A church cannot have any exclusions. In making the church inclusive, I believe we're fulfilling our gospel mandate," The Reverend Charles Bull said. The church is submitting an application for funding to the Ontario Government's Access Fund on July 1. The government provides a 50 per cent subsidy for those projects approved. Rev. Bull said the church will know if they are successful in their application bid by Octo- ber. The Anglican Church recent- ly received a donation from the estate of Evelyn Allen, and plan to use some of the money to- wards the remodelling of the church. Deputy Warden Mike Coxon said they are optimistic that they will dlso receive the gov- ernme t funding. "This is not for the church alone. The entire community will benefit from the changes, and I think that will be taken into consideration when the de- cision is being made," Mr. Cox- on said. Currently, the building is used not only for church serviC- es, but also for a variety of com- munity service clubs and organ- izations. Among the changes being proposed include a wheelchair entrance, a sound system for the hearing impaired, and a re- structuring of the washrooms to accomodate the disabled. The estimated cost for all of the renovations is approximate- ly $20,000. Gerald Robinson, the archi- tect working on the project, does not plan to make any changes that would take away from the historical integrity of the church, which was built in the 1870s. Rev. Bull said they plan to use the side entrance and re- model the interior of the church, rather than building a large, concrete wheelchair ramp at the front of the build- ing. "The stairs are the disability, not the person in the wheel- chair," Mr. Coxon said. "This isn't about disability, it's about membership. These things aren't frills, they're ne- cessities." Rev. Bull and Mr. Coxon said some of the changes will still be made, even if they do not re- ceive the government subsi- dy.
