The couple defeated Adam Johnston and lise Stiller in On June 28, Port Perry's rep team in the York-Durham League were on the road to play in Bramalea. This was a tough battle in the hot sun and the host team took advantage of their opportunities to take a 3-2 win. Our Legionaires took a 1-0 second inning lead but weren't able to give the knock-out punch as we had bases loaded with none out but couldn't push any more runs across the plate. We went ahead 2-0 in the third when Chris Jones slugged a solo homer. Bramalea battled back by taking a run on a lead off walk and a passed ball. They took the lead in the fourth in- ning when the lead off hitter scored a single and a three base error quickly followed by an- other passed ball score. A couple of "soft" defensive plays on the Legionaire's part were interspersed among some solid defensive plays such as Brad's catch on a sinking liner in right field. Some poor sliding efforts on steal attempts had an impact during the contest as did some "called" third strikes on our part. Chris Jones was collared with the loss on four hits, five strike outs and six walks. Ryan Kroek- er had 11 strike outs to take the win for Bramalea. Casey Van Schagen was three for four for Port while Chris was two for three. Other hits were by Ryan McQuade, Scott Jeffrey, Ryan Moynes, and Michael Versage. Free passes to first were earned by Brad (two), Michael and Ryan ESE, | Midgets defeat Bramalea and Scarborough to stay in top spot in the league This week's sports report is sponsored by RB. Moase, C.A. and Ives Florist and Antiques. The Port Midget Merchants had a successful week, winning both league games. On Tuesday, they met Bra- malea and Jeff Card pitched for a 4-1 win, striking out nine, walking one, and allowing only two hits with no earned runs. ~ Port went ahead in the fourth on a lead off double by Darrell Vander Slagt and an RBI single by Grant Kay. In the sixth they broke the game wide open with three runs on singles by Chad Venning, an RBI single by Scott MacLennan, and a two RBI triple by Steve Stiles. On Thursday, the Port Mid- gets travelled to Scarborough, and beat the Scarborough Dias 13-7. Chad Venning picked up the win by striking out two, walking four, and allowing 11 hits for six earned runs. Denis Smith relieved in the seventh by striking out two and walking one. Hitters for the game were Jeff Card with one single and two home runs, Jason Cochrane with one home run, Scott Ma- cLennan with two singles, Ja- son McBride with a single and a double, Brad Moase and Chad Venning with a single each, Todd Smart with two singles, and Denis Smith with three sin- gles. On Sunday, the Midget Mer- chants were invited to play the XL Eagles in an exhibition Fraser. Steady outfield catches were made by Reid McTaggart in left and Darryl Dalton in centre. Jon Froats handled his first base opportunities adroitly. A special commendation to Scott game in their home tourna- ment. Fortunately for the mid- gets, some of the XL skills might have been left at the re- freshment tent, and the Mid- gets won the game 8-0 on some strong pitching by Denis Smith, Chad Venning and Jeff Card. They combined to allow no runs on two strike outs, two walks, and allowed only five hits. Not only were the Merchants play- ing good defensive ball, but they also hit well as a warm up for the up-coming OASA Elimina- tions next weekend in Strat- ford. Hitters for the game were Jason Cochrane with two sin- gles, Brad Moase and Darrell Vanderligt with one single each, Steve Laird with a triple, and Darrell Vander Slagt with a single, double and a grand slam home run. I am sure the Eagles will want to play the midgets again under different circumstances, and we look forward to the chal- lenge. Please see the "Standings Corner" for the Oshawa and District League Standings, as well as the Merchant Midget hitters of the week. Schedule for the next two weeks: June 30 - Port vs Stroud - 8:30 p.m.; July 3, 4, 5, - OASA Eliminations in Stratford - first game Friday at 5 p.m.; July 6 - Port vs Scarborough Reds - 8:30 p.m.; July 7 - Markham vs Port - 8:30 p.m. Squirt Legionnaires lose A nailbiter to Bramalea Jeffrey's gutsy effort in filling in at the demanding catching posi- tion. Next home game for the Port Perry Squirts will be July 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Water St. south diamond. See you there! Gambler winning streak snapped at thirteen games after a 2-1 defeat The 13 game winning streak that the Greenbank Gamblers had going for themselves, final- ly came to an end when they dropped a tight 2-1 decision to Scarborough Thunder on Sun- day afternoon at the Port Perry Tournament. The Greenbank team have an overall win-lose-tie record of 19- 5-2 for the season and two of their five loses have now come at the hands of the Scarborough team who also handed them a set-back at the Bradford Tour- nament. Things don't get any easier for the Gamblers this week as they play home and home league games with Peterbo- rough I.C.G.; (Tuesday in Peter- borough and Thursday in Greenbank) and then head to Napanee on Friday night to compete in the International Sojipai Congress Ontario Fi- nal. Greenbank got good pitching in the tournament from Mark Goreski, Wayne Wells and Bill Buys and the hitting was Leo by Terry Till and John Tait. But they came up short against the Scarborough squad. Last week in league play the Gamblers stopped Winslow - Gerolamy in Peterborough by a 5-1 count and then shut out the Pete Juniors by 5-0 in Green- bank. The home and home series this week with 1.C.G. could de- termine playoff standings in the Peterborough League. The Gamblers hold top spot over I.C.G. and Winslow - Gerolamy but these three teams are tight- ly bunched and any of them could wind up in top spot at the finish.
