David Brown, administrator at Community Memorial Hospi- tal, said this letter gives the board permission to begin pre- paring detailed drawings on the planned expansion. Architecture firm Dunlop Farrow has been selected to pre- pare the drawings, which is ex- pected to take three months. If all goes well, the board will put the project to tender in early October, Hospital Board chair- man Ted Griffen said. Ground could be broken in early Novem- ber. "That's an optimistic sched- ule and should be looked at as such. Nobody knows," he says. The project has a budget of $5.2 million. To date approxi- mately $2.8 million has been raised through local funding, with the remainder coming from the ministry. Mr. Griffen says receiving the letter last week was a bit of a milestone for the board, as it wondered if they would ever get approval to begin the project. He says a meeting in Bowman- ville a month ago with Ms. Lar- kin helped speed up the process. The announcement couldn't have come at a better time for Mr. Griffen who stepped down as chairman of the hospital board at its annual meeting on June 29. He will continue as a board member, however. "It's sure a good way to go out," he said. The expansion calls for an ad- ditional 20,000 square feet to be added to the west side of the ex- isting building. It will also feature the first Labor Delivery Recovery Postpartum rooms in the region. It will also feature an expanded cafeteria: and kitchen. Various renovations will also be conducted. Asignificant feature of the ex- pansion is that it will provide additional capacity to handle emergency situations. Doctor Bob Allin, Chief of Staff, says the expansion will promote better service in which both the patient and the hospi- tal will benefit. "This is going to principally address the needs of the region," he said. Dr. Allin noted there has been a significant rise in the number of emergency cases at the hospital in the past five years. The project is expected to take approximately 18 months.
