The Izumi brothers won the two day tournament with an im- pressive total weight of 41.10 unds, from a total of 12 bass maximum allowable over two days). Peter and Mike Hartman from Toronto were second with 33.90 pounds, and the team of Paul Marshman and Gerhard Mansholt from Cannington, ON placed third with 29.76 pounds. A number of Peterborough anglers finished in the money. John MacDonald along with his COR Ge partner Dave Johnson placed seventh. Henry Gatt and John Merritt came in 13th, and Lynn Johnson and Bob Gardner fin ished 19th. : Peter Davidson of Port Perry, and his partner Hector Peach, two of the biggest money mak- ers on last year's circuit, took 14th spot with a total of 25.25 ounds of bass. Tom and Steve Lawrence of Marmora caught 26.05 pounds, good for 10th place. Over 150 anglers took part in this first tournament of the 1992 GM Pro Bass trail. Next stop is Kingston next weekend for The Canadian Open. The $650,000 Port Perry Open held on Lake Scugog and Stur- Lake began the tourna- ment trail which will carry on until the long weekend in Sep- . tember. The season is capped off with the $100,000 Classic in Pe- terborough. - : Each year hundreds of fisher- men: travel every weekend to different towns to try and catch the biggest and best fish, even though they do not keep any of them. The competition in these tournaments is fierce as each fisherman vies for more than $500,000 in prize money. Each tournament is com- prised of no more than 150 two- man teams. The team with the highest two-day weight of large or smallmouth bass, with a maximum of 10 fish, is the top prize winner. Each team's best four com- bined weights are the deciding factor on who qualifies for the Classic to be held in Peterbo- rough on Sept. 4-6. The top 48 anglers advance to the Classic. Following Scugog's event this past weekend the remainder of the tournament schedule is as follows: the $50,000 Orillia Open in the Port of Orillia on July 11 and 12, the $50,000 Tri- Lakes Open in Bridgenorth on July 25 and 26, the $50,000 Mid- land Open at the Midland Har- bour on Aug. 15 and 16-and the $50,000 Rideau Ferry on Aug. 22 and 23. : ins ~ At the end of each day's com- pejifion, weigh-in shows are ld. Large crowds gather to watch 'the-weighing in of éach teams catch, and to catch a glimpsé of celebrities such as Bob and Wayne Izumi of the Real Fish- ing Show and Angelo Viola of CBC's Fishin' Canada. =~ Prizes are also awarded to au- dience members during the weigh-in shows. GM Pro Bass Tournaments are live release events and Shi- mano Canada provides the fa- mous Canadian-designed live release boat to ensure all bass are returned to area waters in good condition. New this year are one-day team events. The entry fee is $200 per event with 150 teams entered. The top overall team, which must fish at least three of the events, will receive an addi- tional $8,000 in cash awards and a birth in the 1992 GM Pro Bass Classic. The Little League Anglers of Canada offers a competition for children in four age categories which are: boys eight-years-old and under, girls eight and un- der, boys nine to 13-years-old and girls nine to 13-years-old. There is no cost to children to enter the event, but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The children will receive priz- es for participation such as local event tickets, shirts, hats and fishing samples.
