The group is opposing landfill sties south of Manchester. Anyone wishing to make donations to the group can write to Donna Shanley, P.O. Box 3224, Prince Albert, Ontario, LIL iC2. PEST group formed to oppose Manchester area landfill sites By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A group appropriately called PEST has been formed to fight a potential landfill site in the Manchester area. * Peat Loam * Top Soil * Triple Mix * Sand * Gravel * Limestone Located at 7 & 23 (SW Comer) 655-4542 8g HWY. #7 | 2 [2 EY TAUNTON Preservation of the Environ- ment of Scugog Township (P.E.S.T.) is comprised of vari- ous members of the community all united in the fight against the three sites recently named in the Highway 12 and Conces- sion 3 area. In all, five sites were named in Scugog, with the other two slotted for Blackstock. The group was introduced to selected members of the public during an invitation only meet- ing held in Port Perry on June 22. According to Ward 1 Council- lor Ken Carruthers, selected representatives of community groups were invited to the meet- ing at Town Hall 1873 in a bid to drum up support for the effort. He called the attendance "a little disappointing" noting that only 110 of the more than 150 expected participants attended the meeting. Nonetheless he said the meet- ing was very beneficial. "I thought it was a very infor- mative meeting," he said. "We got some good feedback." Councillor Carruthers noted that they got strong support from the various groups. He said both moral and financial support was indicated. PEST, which is chaired by Councillor Carruthers and Da- vid Sparling of Prince Albert, presented an overview of the sit- uation. Representatives from Zero Garbage/Scugog and SCOPE (Scugog Citizen's Or- ganization for the Preservation of the Environment) also spoke during the meeting. Councillor Carruthers says the group has decided against taking legal action or staging loud demonstrations until a short list is announced in Sep- tember. He says they will instead pre- pare a logical argument to ex- press their opposition to the sites. Members of PEST have brok- en into four special areas to pre- pare a brief to the Interim Waste Authority (IWA) sched- uled for July 13. Although the group has decid- ed to take a somewhat quiet stance on the landfill decision, not all are supportive of the de- cision. Mrs. Walter Ankert of Myrtle Station who attended the June 22 meeting, says there is a need to show the government that the community doesn't want a landfill site. "We have to make it known to the general public and the gov- ernment that we oppose these sites as much, if not more, than any other area. We cannot keep alow profile as was suggested at the meeting at the Town Hall," shesaysin aletter to the editor. "We need to demonstrate, hold public rallies and march on Queen's Park too. Come on citi- zens of Scugog, do you really want a dump to destroy our township when most of the gar- bageisn'tevenours:® ccc
