By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Parks and Recreation De- partment has plans in the works for allits recreation areas in Scugog Township. According to Marilyn Pearce, chairman of the Parks and Rec- reation Committee, it is not just areas of Port Perry that are hav- ing park upgrading and addi- tions but all areas of Scugog Township. Last week Wilma Wotten of Blackstock wrote a letter to the editor stating she was angry about a story in which Council- lor Pearce talked about plans for a boardwalk and park north of Scugog Memorial Library. She- said although Palmer Park is beautiful and truly en- hances the waterfront, she does not take her children to play there. Feeling someone needed to speak up for the smaller com- munities she said "I would point out that villages such as Nestle- "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Pearce says plans are in the works for all township parks ton, Caesarea, Blackstock and Greenbank and those not men- tioned, all have parks with spe- cific needs and various poten- tials. Councillor Pearce told the 'Star although she did not state any plans for other parks in that article there are definately plans in the works for all parks in Scugog Township. "I was responding to ques- tions on a particular area (the area north of the boat launch)" she said. Blackstock recently was the recipient of a new maintenance contract for the ball diamonds at the fairgrounds. New dia- monds were recently completed at Cartwright Central Public School. This project was in con- junction with the Cartwright Minor Ball committee and the public school SAC committee. A new roof was also puton the arena, new flooring in the kitch- en and new steps at the Old Town Hall. A park improvement project Greenbank residents are facing shortage of water this summer Greenbank could face a water shortage later this summer, says Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie. Although parts of the south- ern Region of Durham are al- ready facing water restrictions, Scugog has avoided rationing to date. But Councillor Christie predicts if the warm, dry sum- mer continues it won't be long before the supplies in the village run low. According to Councillor Christie some parts of the vil- lage obtain their water from wells, while the older section was updated recently to a new water system with processed water. The municipalities of Ajax and Pickering currently have water restriction in place, and Councillor Christie believes it could be extended to more parts of the region. Councillor Christie says the lakefront municipalities, which obtain water from the lake, are suffering from low waterlevels. She does not believe Port Perry will be affected however as it operates frum a well sys- tem. = RUE Ib 99 | b pod in Seagrave will get underway this month. The $108,000 joint project between the Townships of Scugog and Mariposa will consist of a 1,248-square foot clubhouse, a new baseball back- stop and playground equip- ment. There are also plans in the works for upgrading to Putsey Park in Caesarea. In 1991 projects were carried out in Palmer Park, Scugog Centre, Scugog Soccer Fields, Cartwright Park and Poplar Park. Prince Albert and View Lake received new playgrounds in 1991. The Parks Department is re- ~ sponsible for the maintenance of 100 acres of parks, open space and township properties. "I would love to be able to sit down and talk to all these groups and respond to their questions about the parks. Giv- en the opportunity I would like to talk about plans," she said. She added the Parks and Rec- reation Department is interest- ed in hearing about people's ide- as for parks and recreation and to help implement the idea if possible. "If a group comes forward with a little bit of cash we will do something to help them out," she added. Flag cut off flag pole on front lawn A Scugog Island man awoke Monday morning and was surprised to find the Canadian flag he has been flying at his Sunrise Beach home gone. Wayne Gibbs told the Star the 4'x8' flag, which he won when he was in high school in 1973, was atop a 30' flag pole -on his front lawn for the past four months. "They just cut the ropes and left them dangling," he said. Mr. Gibbs said that he can replace the flag easily, but for sentimental reasons, he would like to get his flag returned. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the flag can contact Mr. Gibbs. --~ Bring or wear a Canadian Flag or Pin and get LONOCOITL | | 10% all purchases.
