12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 7, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PEST, local media trashed at meeting : By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star What started out as an infor- mation meeting on the proposed landfill sites in Scugog Town- ship, turned into a heated de- bate with the local media and PEST, the meeting's host, being the target of critism. PEST (Preserve the Environ- ment for Scugog Township) or- ganized the meeting in hopes of educating local residents and gathering their support on the issue. But a portion of the approxi- mately 65 people in attendance slammed the newly-formed group, voicing their opinion of Plan for dump protest Friday Area residents concerned about the five proposed landfill sites in Scugog Township arein- vited to attend a local protest rally this Friday. The protest will take place from4-6 p.m. Although the location of the protest is not being published, interested persons may call PEST (Preserve the Environ- ment for Scugog Township) committee member Maureen Hall at 985-9682. how the group is handling the issue. The 11-member committee, which formed two weeks ago and has met every night since, originally decided against tak- ing legal action or staging loud demonstrations until a short list is announced in September. Instead, the group had opted to prepare a logical and prepared argument and present it to the Interim Waste Authority (IWA) on July 13. This tactic did not sit well with some of the residents who_ proposed the fight against the landfill sites should become more vocal and visual. By taking the quiet approach, one resident said she feared the IWA and the Ontario govern- ment would "walk all over us." It was suggested that big signs should be erected along Highway 2 and sign-waving demonstrations should be held. "We can't be like an ostrich," said Gary Beadle of Prince Al- bert. "We can't stick our head in thesand." Bill Lishman of Zero Gar- bage, the group fighting the two proposed sites near Blackstock, agreed, saying that although he agrees with the approach by PEST, there "is still alot of room for yelling and screaming. "You have to make people aware and you have to disturb them," he said. PEST committee member Maureen Hall agreed. In an emotional plea, she asked her fellow committee members to change the focus of the group to become more vocal. rs. Hall also lashed out at the committee for what she called its poor publicity of the Sunday meeting. "I'm disappointed (by the number of people) at this meet- ing," she said. "Nobody is here because nobody knows" about the meeting." At this point, some of the peo- ple in attendance started blast- ing the local newspapers for not giving the issue enough cover- age. "You should be giving us the front page of your newspaper," a woman yelled. "What are you doing for us," a man said accusingly while pointing at this Port Perry Star reporter. After the meeting, Conces- sion 2 resident June Aldridge told the Star why she would like to see the action of PEST be- come more vocal. "The government is going to put it (the dump) in the area they get the less schtick from," she said. - "We will never get rid of the scar" a dump would create, she added.
