T & C LIMOUSINE SERVICE PORT PERRY PLAZA » 68 SCUGOG STREET DIVISION of THE Letters to the editor Quebec sets agenda, Canada follows To the Editor: Ten years ago Her Majesty The Queen, our Canadian Head of State and of the Common- wealth of Nations, signed the Canadian Constitution in Otta- wa. Prime Minister Trudeau and three of the four signators were French-Canadians. The ink was barely dry when Que- bec demanded more and more powers with Meech Lake. Ten years later The Queen was in- vited back in the middle of the controversy to soothe Canadi- ans with an appeal for national unity. Her Majesty's 18th visit to Canada. The constitutional ammend- ments are for one purpose only - to appease Quebec and give them virtually unlimited power with a veto -- powers the other nine provinces are denied. Premier Bourassa boycotts the First Ministers' meetings sitting on the sidelines like a poker player making side bets on how much Quebec will get without even showing up. It was Bourassa in 1971 that scut- tled the agreement reached at the Victoria conference, after pressure from the separatist St. Jean Baptiste Society. For some 21 years we have been faced with unlimited demands from Quebec, while Mulroney "rolls the dice" on the future of some 20 million Canadians outside Quebec. Prime Minister Trudeau said it all, "Quebec sets the agenda -- the rest of Canada follows." Constitutional expert Sen. Eu- gene Forsey said it even more clearly, "The rest of Canada has in reality become a colony of Quebec, with Quebec effectively controlling Canada -- but Cana- da has no say what happens in Quebec." The tail wagging the dog' Premier Getty and Premier Wells remain steadfast on the Triple E Senate while Quebec and Ontario's Bob Rae (backing Quebec) demand a veto for Que- bec. A veto for Quebec makes the rest of Canadians second class citizens. The entertainment in Ottawa for our 125th birthday was dom- inated with French, with Eng- lish, the most widely used lan- guage in the world, a poor sec- TOPSOIL DELIVERED Port Perry and surrounding area. Catering to Quebec only weakens the rest of Canada in negotiating a constitutional amendment. Other than senate reform the rest of Canada gets virtually nothing while Quebec, as usual, gets the lion's share. As Gary Lautens, a senior col- umnist and executive for Toron- to Star wrote, "Quebec just plain isn't interested in the rest of us." He went on - "Ontario, B.C. and Alberta have helped pay Quebec's bills -- it takes more from Ottawa than it gives." He concluded "Why doesn't Quebec love us? I don't have the answer but it's true." About 500,000 Anglophones have left Quebec, some 20,000 a year in the years from 1966 to 1986. Immigrants to Quebec, 40 per cent leave within 10 years with 60 per cent leaving after three decades. French speaking immigrants like Hai- tians are welcome in Quebec while Anglos are discriminated against in education and jobs. Less than one per cent of jobs in the 53,000 with the Quebec gov- ernment are given to English speaking "while in Ontario Francophones are given priori- ty in many government jobs -- Peterson's Bill 8 cost us $200 million and still rising. The Ma- ple Leaf flag is not flown in the National Assembly of Quebec. So why all the catering to Que- bec on our 125th birthday? You guessed it, a federal election not far off. Quebec wants to issue its own passports and control im- migration among a never end- ing list of demands. They are in fact, a country within a country - with the rest of the country paying the lion's share. A life- long Quebecor, Mort. Richler said it as it is in his numerous articles in the press. Wake up Canadians! You can feed a lion Where was To the Editor: P.E.S.T. (Preserve the Envi- ronment of Scugog Township) a residents' committee formed to fight the proposed dump sites, held a public meeting at the Town Hall on Sunday evening. Apparently, the issue of dumps in Scugog was not 1m- portant enough for our mayor to bother to attend the meeting. Apparently, the meeting was of so little importance that our mayor would not allow an an- nouncement at the Canada Day fireworks. Mayor Hall did at- tend an earlier meeting and in- formed those present that coun- cil had passed resolutions opposing the dump sites - this is a beginning, but obviously may- - sion that's costing us more than $32 million a year alone, from only so long and when you run out of goodies the lion will de- vour you. A number of thinking Cana- dians, have expressed the feel- ing that no matter what the rest of Canada does, Quebec sooner or later will separgte. The loss of the $25 billion hydro deal with New York only de- layed separation until they be- come economically strong enough. They already take mil- lions of kilowatts of power from Labrador and sell it on the for- [| eign market at 10 times what | | they pay Labrador. (Toronto | Star) Thousands of jobs are moved into Quebec from the other provinces. Canada's reply to the U.N.is in French only. Here in Durham the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship re- vealled that "People who speak French as their first language account for only between .35 | per cent to 2.5 per cent." Why then are we spending hundreds of millions on French in our schools, starting with Immer- our reality taxes. Ottawa has created an artificial ploy to push French on unsuspecting parents with Parents for French funded by Ottawa, to | the tune of $500,000 a year. | Cuts in health care, education and essential services but not one penny cut from French. Bi- lingual today, French tomor- row. The masters of deceit are at work in Ottawa. Beware Ca- nadians. As of last September, more than 414,000 children were on social assistance in Ontario alone. Food banks short of food. Charity starts at home. Dean J. Kelly, President, Assoc. of Dedicated Canadians (established 1967) our Mayor? ors in other areas have chosen to take a more active approach | on behalfeftheir taxpayers. Councillors Ken Carruthers | and David Dietlein are both in- | | volved with anti-dump groups | | (PEST. and Zero Garbage) and along with Yvonne Christie and Manlyn Pearce, were in attendance Sunday evening. Everyone in our township, in- cluding our mayor, must work together - a dump at any of the five potential sites will destroy our community. Where is our mayor and has he forgotten how he got his job?
