"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" © PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 7, 1992 - 17 HELP program provides quality life for elderly By Marnie Luke Port Perry Star Sandy McCully and Tina Demmers don't know the mean- ing of the term "coffee break". Both work full 'time at the Community Memorial Hospi- tal, Ms. McCully as the Dis- charge Planner and Diabetes Education Co-ordinator, and Ms. Demmers as the Director of Physiotherapy. But somewhere in those busy schedules, they also find the time to run the Healthy Envi- ronment for Long-Term Pa-. tients (HELP) program. And on most days, this means giving up their lunch and coffee breaks. HELP is designed to improve the quality of life for both chronic care patients, and those awaiting an alternate level of care, such as a nursing home. Ms. McCully and Ms. Dem- mers work with dietary and nursing staff, adult volunteers, and Scugog Community Care to Birdseye swimming pool ready Birdséye Pool is open for an- other season of wet and wild fun. "Many of these patients have been here for so long that they forget what it's like to wear street clothes. We're trying to get them back into a normal life," Ms. Demmers said. HELP began just 18 months ago, when hospital staff became concerned that long-term pa- tients needed more contact with the outside world. Because the program does not receive any financial assis- tance, hospital staff and volun- teers organize and conduct all events on their own time. But Ms. McCully and Ms. Demmers say they ¢ouldn't ithout the tremendous volunteer sup- port they receive from the com- munity. Over the past months, they have taken patients shopping at the Oshawa Centre, held a Remembrance Day Service, put on by the Legion, served a Can- dlelight and Wine Dinner for patients and their families, and have thrown numerous parties for Christmas, St. Valentine's Day, ang St. Patrick's Day. "These patients take on a new air when they're out of bed and dressed in their own clothes. They look happier and healthier," Ms. McCully said. Although the odd patient was reluctant to participate at first, she said almost all enjoy them- selves now and anxiously await each monthly event. Aside from the major excur- sions, HELP staff also organiz- es weekly activites, such as bin- go and gentle gym. When the program first be- gan, hospital and volunteer staff took part in an exercise put on by the Office of Senior Citizens, entitled "Through Other Eyes". They were required to wear earplugs, leg and wrist weights, goggles which distorted their vision, and had to walk with a cane while performing a list of tasks throughout the hospital. "It was a real eye-opener. Even in an environment we're familiar with, a simple thing like looking up a phone number was very difficult," Ms. Dem- mers said. All agreed it was a useful ex- ercise which helped them bet- ter understand the needs of the elderly patients. The most recent event put on by the HELP program was a barbecue and Pet Therapy, In which local residents and hospi- tal staff brought in their pets to CORRECTION The advertisement in last weeks issue of the Port Perry Star for Village Garden Centre should have read $5.00 per sq. ft. installed interlock walk, patios and driveways.
