' PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 7, 1992 - 31 | "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Open house attracts 100 shufflers By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star Shuffleboard could become the hottest summer sport in Scugog Township. Its popularity was evident at the Shufflebosrd Open House held Thursday afternoon at the Scugog Arena. More than 100 avid and ama- teur shuffleboarders from Scu- gog Township and across south- central Ontario attended the event and had an opportunity to play a few games. The 18-court facility is home to the newly-formed Scugog Shuffleboard Club and will be in full use this week during the Ca- nadian National Shuffleboard Championships. The doubles-style tourna- ment began this morning (Tues- day) with the amateur event. The open event starts Wednes- day and concludes on Thursday. During the open house, Hugh Ormiston, president of the Scu- gog Shuffleboard Club, told the Port Perry Star he was pleased with the turnout and expects the club will grow in numbers. In fact he is confident that it won't be long before the SSC is the largest in the nation. "This will be the biggest club in Canadain two years time," he predicted, adding he expects league play will be spread over three nights each week. He also thanked the Scugog Township council and the arena board for supporting the ven- ture. At the open house, Scugog Mayor Howard Hall said it is great to see another use for the arena during the summer months. He said the club and the Canadian tournament will be good for both the arena and the township. Refreshments for the open house were donated by Country Style Donuts, IGA, and Valu- Mart. | | | | | | i | | | | | | { PP George Skerratt, a founding member of the Scugog Shuffle- board Club, gives Marilyn Pearce, Ward 2 Councillor and Chair- man of the Parks and Recreation Committee, a few pointers at the Shuffleboard Open House. get Fe Hid : Gwen and Lawrence Malcolm of Scugog Township enjoy : playing shuffleboard at their winter home in Florida.
