Markham and Peel have plastic recycling, why don't we? The diaper manufac- turers claim their product is.re- cyclable, so the government must make them provide the fa- cilities to. do so. Unwanted items can be placed in a special section at the transfer station with people who want such items allowed to come and take them. Once a week this area would then be disposed of. 2. Reduce: As with recycling most of us know what can be done here. I also believe manu- facturers should be required by law to adhere to strict guide- lines restricting them from placing products in containers in other packaging to fool the consumer that the product is larger than it actually is. Store owners can also protest to the manufacturer and so can the consumer. For example, I bought a tube of sunscreen and this tube was placed in a card- board box. This was not neces- - sary and I wrote the manufac- turerimmediately. 3. Incinerate: Ms, Grier and the Ministry of En vironment refuse to consider this issue, yet in the United States and Europe this method has had great success. Incineration plants provide em- ployment and incentive for peo- ple torecycle. They also can pro- vide energy. They can burn with virtually no affect on the envi- ronment and the technology is improving every day. 4. Kirkland Lake: At the Queen's Park protest officials from 'Kirkland Lake repeated their plea to to government to send them the garbage to no avail. They want it but Ms. Gri- er says that out of sight is out of mind. She would rather destroy farmland. Putting the garbage in abandoned mines would pro- vide a great financial windfall to Kirkland Lake. Not only would they receive money from the areas providing the gar- bage, but they could tap the methane gas to produce elec- tricity and create more jobs 'with the plant and even sell the hydro back to the local power authority. I have only briefly touched on these issues but I wanted to in- form the average person that there are alternatives to land- fills. Maybe then I won't get peo- SKARNIK 1992 in the Port Perry WJ Eb AT ~ JACKSON Cheryl Anne Jackson & Robert Skamikat were united in marriage on May 30, United Church by Rev. Glenn Jackson. There are enough alternatives, even more than outlined above that if com- bined can eliminate the need for ever making another landfill sitein Canada again. I realize some of these methods will cost a lot of money that will ultimately be paid by the consu- mer and taxpayer but the price paid is how it if we can stop the destruction of our farmland, water, environment and prov- ince. Every citizen in the township and entire Greater Toronto Area needs to show the govern- ment that they are not going to accept the creation of the IWA, Bill 143 and the entire notion that the only solution to our gar- bage crisis is a landfill. Please show us your support by joining your local no dump group and by writing the gov- ernment telling them to pursue alternatives to landfills. Every- one in the GTA nees to do this. Our votes count. Let's show them how we feel. Every littl bit helps. : Thank you again for the sup- port in favor of the protest and for all those who honked their agreement with our demonstra- tion. We hope we did get your at- tention. We have to fight this who pro- cess as well as fighting the se- lection of our sites in Scugog. Don't be apathetic. That's what the government wants because it makes their job a lot easier. The next time there is a general public meeting or protest rally make sure you go and get your neighbor to go. It is the least you can do. And put a green ribbon everywhere to show you sup- port us. : Maureen Hall Port Perry Member of PEST (Preserving the Environment of Scugog Township) 985-9682 TIRED OF LONG DISTANCE CHARGES!
