Als AA aR ad "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" About 100 local residents PHO along Highway 012 ¢ at Concession 3 Friday evening. Area resident Peter Faillaise shows his disapproval in the Ontario Government's landfill site selection process. (See story for details.) Protestors line highway By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star The rain Friday afternoon didn't dampen the spirits of area residents rotesting the proposed landfill sites located along Highway 12 in Scugog Township. About 100 residents -- from infants to grandparents -- lined the highway near Concession 3 slowing weekend traffic while getting their point across. Although the speed of traffic was reduced, many of the motor- ists showed their support of the group's action by honking their horns and giving the thumbs up sign. Protest organizer Maureen Hall said she she was pleased with the turnout and the re- sponse from travellers. She said the purpose of the protest was to raise awareness of the threat area landowners are facing. The Interim Waste Authority (IWA), a government-appointed body mandated to find long- term landfill sites in Durham, Peel and York, have pin-pointed five sites in Scugog Township -- three of which are along High- way 12 at Concession 3. The oth- er two are located near Black- stock along Highway 7A at the West Quarter Line. All of the potential sites in Scugog are located on Al farm- land. Don Mitchell, the North Ward Councillor for the Town of Whitby, attended the protest. He said his ward would be greatly affected if one of the Highway 12sitesis selected. Whitby council was expected to pass a traffic bylaw on Mon- day stating that any traffic re- lated to the dump must bypass the villages of Brooklin and Myrtle.
