"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 14, 1992 - 29 Midgets will meet Paris in first match of the All- Ontario championships This week's Midget Mer- chants sports report is spon- sored by Scugog Rental and Piz- za Delight. After the excitement and ten- sion of the recent Elimination Games, this week's regular league matches seemed flat and slow to watch. It seems that a little time is needed now for all the league teams to get their second wind for the last half of the season. On Monday, the Midget Mer- chants met the Scarborough Reds and were on the losing end of a 5-2 match. Denis Smith pitched a good game, but the Midget bats and defence did not give him the necessary support to pull out a win. Scott MacLen- nan with an RBI single and Brad Moase with an RBI triple drovein the only runs. On Tuesday, the midgets again arrived at the ball park without their usual enthusias- tic approach. They were losing 3-1 to Markham until the 7th inning when their bats sudden- ly came alive. Contributing to the final 4-3 win were Steve Laird with an RBI, Steve Stiles with an RBI double. Chad Ven- ning on the mound picked up the win with a strong pitching effort. See the "Standings Corner" for the Oshawa and District League Standings and the Mer- chant Midget Hitters of the Week. . Last weekend at the Elimina- tion Games, Steve Laird was honored with an invitation to attend the evaluation camp for selection to the 1993 Ontario All-Star Team participating in the summer games in Kam- loops, B.C., and possible selec- tion to the National Youth Team participating in the World Championships to be held in New Zealand in 1993. Congratulations are extended to Steve from the coaches and team members. The Port Midgets have just been informed that their first game in the "All Ontario Cham- pionships" to be held in New Hamburg on August 29-30 will be against a team from Paris. Other participants are teams from Amherstburg, Tara, Bracebridge, North Frederick- sburgh, New Hamburg and one team from either Elmira, St. Clements, Exeter, or Mitchell. The schedule for the next 2 weeks is: July 14, Oshawa vs. Port Perry, 8:30; July 21, Port Perry vs. Aurora, 8:30; July 23, Stroud vs. Port Perry, 8:30. The team record to date is: Games played 35, Wins 24, Ties 2, Losses 9, Average .714, Runs for 197 (Average 6.6), Runs against 120 (Average 3.4). Mosquito Select team takes part in Festival Days tournament By Tim LePage On Saturday, July 11, Port Perry's Mosquito select soccer team played in the Scugog Fes- tival Days Tournament. The team played extremely well considering that they had never played together before and were a man short for the first two games of the tourna- ment. Our first game was against a very strong North Toronto team. North Toronto was up two goals before Mark Sauter fired a shot from the 18-yard box that hit the crossbar and bounced in to make it 2-1 for North Toronto. In the second half, North To- ronto scored three more goals before Jon Chambers scored a beautiful goal for us on a nice cross from Wade Ritchie. Ex- haustion and playing a man short started to show on our guys and North Toronto took this game 7-2. After a short rest, our players took to the field again to face an aggressive team from Bradford. Bradford scored first but Mark Sauter got one back for us min- utes later on a shot from outside the 18-yard box. Bradford still managed to slip a goal in de- spite the outstanding goal tend- ing of Jamie Byers and great ef- fort from Derek Tindall and Aaron Chambers on defense. In the second half our team kept it close thanks to great work on everyone's part. Unfor- tunately, in the last five min- utes, Bradford had a surge of goals and we lost this game 6-1. In the final game of the day, we had two fresh players to help us out against the team from Markham. Lawrence Cook scored first for us on a nice shot just inside the 18-yard box. Just before half time, Lawrence scored again on a great pass from Russel Brown. In the sec- ond half, Lawrence got his third of the game on a good pass from Scott Cunningham. This put us up 3-0. Markham managed to squeeze a goal past our rookie goalie, Jon Chambers, but that was all they would get. Scott Cunningham scored our fourth goal which completed a beauti- ful passing play that started with Wyatt Park bringing the ball out of our end. The assists going to [Lawrence and Mark. Excellent efforts and smart thinking by Blayne Kinnunen and Brad Hawker played an im- portant part in our 4-1 win over Markham. We all had a lot of fun that day thanks to the tournament organizers, referees, and sup- portive parents. A special thanks to Todd and Jerry. 20 YEARS AGO WEDNESDAY, JULY 12, 1972 The IGA Pee Wees attended the annual tour- nament in Belleville. The team had tough luck losing both of their games.
