"The Rotary Club is the old- est of all service clubs, but quite often we don't let others know this," he said. He suggested more people could get to know about Rotary through publicity, and urged every member of the Port Perry club to help develop new members this year. "I am looking for an increase of at least two new members in every club in the region this year," he stated. Mr. Hillier also said he was pleased to see women becom- ing involved in Rotary, and that the Port Perry club was considering women. "Gender is not important, and there are plenty of women in the area who would make excellent Rotary members," he said. York and Peel Regions. Despite Councillor Johnson's suggestions Durham begin op- posing the process, the Chair- man of Durham Region Gary Herrema believes they should wait for the short list. "We must wait for the three sites," he said. "We're going to push Mrs. Grier for just a realis- tic look rather than a political solution and let us go to Kirk- land Lake and let us take a look at incineration. She's trying to get a political solution to an en- vironmental problem." Chairman Herrema says he has heard some criticism from the public over the decision to reserve judgement, but he be- lieves it is the best course of ac- tion to take. "I don't think they're quite aware that we're following it very closely," he said. "We don't want to go shooting blanks right Brooklin at Thickson Rd. now to find out that there's a real reason eventually." But while the regional coun- cillors have decided to put off the action, Chairman Herrema is concerned others won't wait for the appropriate time. He says he has heard rumors of pro- tests to block roads in and around Toronto with farm equipment on a scale which will "make the truckers' convoy look like kindergarten." "I think they're seeing what's being acquired in Europe by civ- il disobedience and they're talk-' ing some of the same stories now which we've never had be- fore." Although it's been relatively calm so far, he's afraid the pro- tests could get out of hand. "So far these people are focus- sing against Mrs. Grier and when they get down to three sites maybe Mrs. Grier is hop- ing half of them will go away," he says. "But these people are bonding and they won't go away. I just hope they keep a bit calm." 655-8011 Juicy Home-made Burger $99 Fries & soft drink, tea or coffee J JULY SPECIALS Lunch Buffet - Canadian & 6% Chinese (Sat. & Sun.only) WEEKDAY SPECIAL Breakfast $9% Lunch Special $4% ro A ASML EUs % SC SRE | U4 } 1!
