"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Lette I'S to the editor Waste reduction efforts must start immediately To the Editor: ~ When I got back from cottage country recently and read that Durham Region plans to take "drastic action" to deal with the landfill crisis, I was thrilled! Vi- sions of mandatory recycling and composting regulations, a user pay system for garbage, and innovative programs such as Materials Recovery Facili- ties and Reuse Centres began to dance in my head. Then I read on, only to learn that everyone seems deter- mined to duck responsibility for the waste crisis and blame it all on the Provincial Government -- after all, only the NDP makes garbage right? Not only that, the region plans to waste $30,000 of taxpayers' money to investigate those old red her- rings, Kirkland Lake and incin- eration. Why is it that when Toronto ships its garbage to us, garbage export is immoral, but when we want to do it to somebody else, it suddenly becomes okay? The small communities in Ontario that were investigated as possi- ble "willing hosts" for Metro's' garbage formed a coalition called RAGE (Rural Action on Garbage) to spread the message that they do not want Toronto's (or presumably anyone else's) garbage. That piece of informa- tion is available free of charge. As for incinerating garbage, those who have studied this subject extensively know full well why Ruth Grier banned it last year. Incineration is ex- tremely expensive, interfers significantly with reduction and recycling programs, emits Thanks for To the Editor: Now that the dust has settled after the annual Festival Days party, I would like to thank the people primarily responsible for making the Seventh Annual Armwrestling Championships so successful. As so often happens, the extra efforts of the few contributed to the major success of the tourna- ment. For the first time, Makita Canada Inc., through the kind efforts and interest of Mr. Alan Webster, Marketing Manager, donated cordless power drills which were presented as special awards. The Chamber of Commerce was very helpful and supportive of my efforts to organize the event, and Ken Carruthers and Bill Dowson were major contrib- pollutants which have com- pletely unpredictable synergis- ticceffects' when combined with other air pollutants, and leaves a huge mess of toxic ash that must be landfilled. Some. solu- tion!! Here's my suggestion for the $30,000 about to be spent on dead end waste strategies. Put it into the public education about the alternatives. Paul Connett and Roger Bailey from New York State have created more than 20 videos which illus- trate persuasively why inciner- ation is a no-go, and why our ef- forts need to be turned now toward - new waste reduction methods. Let's take advantage of the considerable knowledge and expertise these two men have gathered about innovative composting, reduction, and re- cycling programs in operation all over the world, and start put- tingitinto practice! Another way to get more val- ue for taxpayers' money is to throw massive efforts into the promotion of Waste Reduction Week, coming up Sept. 27 - Oct. 4. I'm well aware that, in the short term, many people's ener- gies are tied up in fighting dump site proposals, and that is entirely understandable. But if we really hope to make long term changes which will wean us away from our habits of ex- cessive garbage creation and the need for mega-dumps, we have to get busy implementing massive waste reduction ef- forts, starting now. Janet Banting, Greenbank, Ontario. everything utors to the cause - in fact they saved the day at the eleventh hour! The facilities this time were far superior to previous years - the Chamber of Commerce {with the help of Ontario Lot- tery Corporation} provided a first-class setting and I hope this will be the trend for the fu- ture. Thanks to the "barkeeps" who provided the hospitality during the day, to the competitors who entered the tournament, and to the very enthusiastic and nu- merous spectators who enjoyed the contest. Next year it will be bigger and better than ever! Yours sincerely, Mike Haigh, Port Perry. Thanks for nothing To the Editor: I'm writing this letter to ex- press my sense of fulfilment in helping the poor individual(s) who were in need of a walkman and some tapes last Thursday. I'm glad I was not silly enough to lock my car door in front of a friend's house, off the main streets, so you would be unable to help yourself to those items you were so 1n need of . ['m also very glad that I live in a small town like Port Perry where we share things like this and that [ don't have to worry about locking myself up hke in a big aity. If you need anything else, please help yourself the next time I'm not around. + Thank you.
