2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August, 5, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Council to play waiting game with market By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Scugog Mayor Howard Hall says township council will wait for the Port Perry Country Mar- ket to begin operations before making a decision on its future. The market has been the cen- tre of controversy for a number of weeks after first announcing its intentions to open on week- ends in the former Zoecon build- ing on Highway 7A in the west end of Port Perry. Two days before its July 25 opening, the township's build- ing inspector issued a stop work order on the building after it was discovered its operators were renovating without a building permit. The building inspector also cited inadequate fire systems, suggesting a sprinkler system or fire wall was needed. Mayor Hall took exception to suggestions that it was the Township of Scugog Council's decision to close the building down. He said council played no - part in the building inspector's decision. He says the regulations dictate what action to take. According to building codes, a facility more than 16,100 square feet is required to be equipped with either a sprink- ler system or fire wall. The Zoe- con building is approximately 17,000. Council! cannot make a deci- sion on whether to allow the building to remain open until it - begins operation, Mayor Hall said. It opened outside on the July 25 weekend, but chose not to open last weekend. Mayor Hall says once the country market is in operation, they will then determine wheth- er the market meets the criteria of the C4-46 zoning designation. "Our legal advice from an out- side legal firm is to let them open for a couple of weeks and see whatisbeingsold," he said. Mayor Hall says council has been getting "a black eye" over the whole affair and says it 1s unfair to suggest that it was council's decision to closé the market. He reinforced that council played no part in the de- cision. Although he admitted a num- ber of complaints were lodged, the decision was made by the chiefbuilding inspector. He also tooK exception to sug- gestions that downtown busi- nesses had a role in the decision and it was made with them in mind. "It is township's job to keep some 17,000 people happy," he said. Mayor Hall says the idea of a country market in Port Perry is a controversial issue but says no matter what the outcome is the town will not suffer. He says downtown Port Perry 1s a unique shopping area, with a lot of "top quality and unique items sold." "The uniqueness of the whole downtown will always keep Port Perry a viable shopping area," he said.
