Is it standard practice of race tracks to harass their best driv- er? Last year Andy Warbutton was robbed of his title of cham- pion when he was disqualified for an over-sized catch can. When talking with Andy he ex- plained that in Canada it is nearly impossible to find a one gallon can. So he used a four li- tre jug. Which at the start of the season he asked if it would be suitable while his car was being checked. He was told it was fine. For anyone who isn't familiar with a catch can, all it does is catch overflow from the radia- tor when the radiator becomes hot. Definitely not a perfor- mance item. But after stripping down every other part of the car they could find nothingelse. This was a major disappoint- .ment for people who paid to see Andy win all year. Then lose the title like that. This year Andy not wanting a repeat performance of the last year surrendered his car to the officials, had it checked and sealed. He thought this would solve the problem. Unfortunate- ly it hasn't. The rumors contin- ue that his car is illegal. Now Andy is faced with a problem. He has been asked to lose on purpose. He has been told he ei- ther backs off or they will throw him out of the track. The prob- lem it seems is that race fans don't want to see the same win- ner every week. And the other drivers are frustrated. So if Andy backs off he will still keep his championship as he is well ahead in points. But should he back off? And can he back off? Do the race fans want to see a fixed race? Do the other drivers think so little in their own abilities that they would want to win that way? I don't think so, otherwise as far as the fans would be concerned they may as well race all evening and decide the winner by picking a name out of a hat. Regardless of the on track results. . I am very disappointed in Mosport as I believe it to be the best track in Ontario and have enjoyed going for a long time. I don't think however, I will be re- turning next year. I also write this without the knowledge of Andy as he is not someone who likes to make waves and tries his best to com- ply with track rules. He is sim- ply a good driver. Someone who loves to race and someone who loves to win. The next time Andy Warbut- ton drives he will have an extra hundred pounds added to his car. A move the track has decid- ed will slow him down. Person- ally I know Andy can win even with the hundred pounds added to his car. The question is will he? And if he does what about the next driver who starts to win? Is this what the fans pay to see?
