SHR & Squirt soccer teams meet in exciting matches 'The Squirt soccer teams were out in force last week for more exciting matches. Starting with only six players, Trader Sams pushed themselves to the limit and ended up coming out on top of an 8-5 score against the Lions Club. A big congrats to Katie Bi- erness who scored five goals! Derek Fishley scored two and Luke Pilkey had his second goal of the'season. Excellent defensive work by Molly Sprague, Darryl Gould- ing and Rob Larmer, and terrif- ic forward play by Chad Wans- borough were all key to Trader's success. Despite the loss, many of the Lions Club players start- ed coming into their own this game. Particularly Kyle Mar- low and Andy Drebit, who each scored two goals, and Richard Brazier who scored one. Port Perry 1.G.A. fell to the much stronger Manvers 2 team by a big 12-0 score. Chase Char- land was unstoppable, with eight goals to his credit! Ashley Notenboom got a hat trick, and Brandon Spearing got one, as well as playing some terrific de- fense. Dylan Charland and Jaime Laurie also played great de- fense, to keep I.G.A. from ad- vancing. What can the 1.G.A. coaching staff say, but the team played another good game de- spite losing. The team passed to one another well, without any one player dominating the PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 18, 1992 - 35 game. Shawn Demaio and Ste- ven Williams did their best in net as did Rebecca Cruickshank and Erin Greary in their defen- sive and forward positions. Haugen's Chicken Barbecue just edged out Brian's Towing in a hard fought game, 4-3. Me- ghan Smith had two goals, and Peter Konstantinopolous and Lindsay Carr each had one. Ke- vin Anderson just missed wid- ening the gap with some close calls. Trevor Lance scored all three for Brian's, and Jessie Legion Squirts finish regular season in second place Port Perry's rep team in the 11-12-year-old division of the York-Durham League have faced some stiff competition in their nearly-ended season and have finished the regular sea- son schedule with a very re- spectable second place finish in the 11 team league. This is the second year in a row that Port Perry has taken second place in their division and this speaks well for our player development system. On Aug. 13 we were shutout by the Stouffville team and the no hit performance of their _ pitching "ace." Six walks got Le- ~ gion batters on base but we wer- en't able to advance beyond third base. Chris Jones took the loss on four hits and seven strikeouts and Jon Froats pitched in relief. The league's year-end tourna- ment was played on Aug. 15 and in the opener, our Oshawa oppo- nent walked away with a 'squeaker' 4-3 win. They used lead off walks to score two of their runs. Our offense came from sin- gles by Chris, Ryan McQuade, Jeff Ashton and Ryan Moynes. Brad Monsma had our one base- on-balls. Chris pitched a three hitter and had 11 strikeouts. Tough loss guys! Port Perry's second game on Saturday was an 8-4 triumph over Thornhill, whom they were facing for the first time this year. Chris registered the win on four hits and seven strike- * outs in addition to collecting two hits himself. Jon recorded the save. Also batting well for the Legionaires were Ryan McQuade, Ryan Moynes and catcher Jeff Ashton, all of whom also had two hits. Single hits were by Scott Jeffrey, Casey VanSchagen and rookie out- fielder Ryan Fraser. The Legionaire's other game over the weekend was a close contest against the league lead- ing Bramalea team. Our team was handicapped by the rule governing the number of pitch- ing "outs" permitted and this ended up contributing to our loss by a 7-2 margin. Port Perry's defensive play was highlighted by two excel- lent shortstop fielding outs by Ts tan UR BEST FALL NUMBERS! While supplies last. Ryan McQuade. Our batters generally hit the ball hard but the ball only went into gaps for Ryan Moynes, Jeff and Casey who had two hits each. Ryan Moynes had a booming triple for the Legionaires. Brad Monsma earned our only walk. Casey and Jon helped fill in for Chris at the pitching position. Superlative enthusiasm and effort was demonstrated by Reid McTaggart, Darryl Dalton and Michael Versage in these games and overall this well coached squad gave an "A" ef- fort in these recent games to represent Port Perry well both on and off the field. Keep up your determined ef- fort and practice for your up- coming OASA Championship tourney! * 40cc; Light 'I'hnompson played a strong game on defense and on his. shift in goal. Britanny Wygerde also did a great job in net dur- ing the second half. , arlene Colton Photography won their game against Rent & Save/Cinemax by default, but in spite of this a fun game was held using players from both teams. Special congratulations to Rebecca Aked who got her first goal of the season, and to Timothy Donohue. Jonathan Dufoe, Justin Shinn, Stacey Cunningham and Nicholas Byers (with three) also had fun scoring goals, in a sterling ef- fort by all. The Port Perry Auto Glass "Stingrays" did it again, win- ning 3-2 against Flieler's Petro Can, keeping their perfect record going. Matthew Kam- minga scored two goals, and Ke- vin Lukas scored one for the Stingrays. Zach Pither hit an excellent head ball, and Lori Powell played courageously in net. Flieler's team found them- selves fighting back in the sec- ond half, with goals being scored by Liam McKeracher and Joseph Kozlinsky. Excel- lent goaltending by Kalin Moon kept Flieler's in the game, and Amanda Sadler played with de- termined effort. Honorable mention goes to Ryan O'Leary, for his work this week and last! Raglan Welding were invinci- ble against Manvers 1, winning 9-0. Kevin Robins got a big five goals! Michael Anderson scored two goals, and Teddy Howarth and Wesley Langmaid each scored one. * weight, clean running. Ideal for casual and fight duty work.
