"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Ray Rankin Carpentry Reflections of a baseball season In the coach's eyes By Frank Trainor For starters, Saturday, Aug. 14, 1992, wasn't your typical weekend kind of a day. Atleast not in this summer of our discontent. The sun shone the whole day through...although its welcome appearance would soon be over- shadowed somewhat by a base- ball diamond full of brilliance in the form of tournament playing, championship dreaming Pee Wee/Squirt boys. parents and families, coaches and friends, officials and casual spectators can at- test, this year's Pee Wee/Squirt boys softball tournament at the north diamond in Port Perry was a spectacular success for all concerned. Having had the privilege of coaching the Ray Rankin Car- pentry entry in this year's event I can truly say that my team, who all played so well all sea- son, never played better than they did in this tournament. Faced with the daunting task of playing two full games back to back (11 am. and 1 p.m.) against the boisterous never- say-die Techstar team and the formidable favorites from Greenbank, Perfect Heating, the Ray Rankin Carpentry team proved their inestimable resolve with two very exciting and very determined wins. Back to back. 15-13 and 12-11. Respectively. Respectably. Each member of this remark- able team, each a class act in his own right, played hard and loose on such an important day to create baseball memories to cherish a lifetime. As their coach I couldn't be more proud, as their friend I couldn't be hap- pier for all of them. Over the length of a season which produced exhilarating highs as well as moments of doubt the end result was that a bunch of fun loving boys became a team of baseball playing, fun loving boys with a common goal and purpose to achieve. They all had a great time. I had fun too. Pineridge Sports, who won the championship, and who had beaten our team in the first playoff game last Tuesday, de- serves a lot of credit along with our congratulations for their victory. They played hard all season and against an uphill obstacle in securing their place in the big game against runner-up Per- fect Heating. To have battled and won so decisely and dztermindly is the crown of their achievement. Hats off too to all the players, from every team for displaying such fine form and sportsman- ship and accolades to Chris Dunn (Techstar coach), John Bacon (Pineridge Sports) and Squirt Pee Wees By Judy MacSween As coach for the Perfect Heat- ing Greenbank team, I would like to congratulate this team for making it to the champion- ship game on Saturday. As the season progressed, as- sistant coach Joe Yakeley and I could see a great improvement in each and every one of your baseball skills. You should be proud of yourselves. I truly en- joyed coaching you. I would like to thank our sponsors Joan and Fred Timms of Perfect Heating for pop do- nated for the tournament and regular season games. Thanks also to Linda and Clive Powell for score keeping, Mr. Martyn for umping bases and Bob and Diane Brown for their help and Pee Wee MoJacks team plays final league game | On Tuesday, Aug. 11 the Port Perry MoJack Pee Wee team travelled to Pickering to play their final league game. Matt Kay started on the mound for the MoJacks and along with some help from his defence cruised through the first four innings giving up only one hit. With the defence firing on all cylinders the offence was work- ing also as by the end of the fourth inning the MoJacks were leading by 8-0. Tim Fitzpatrick came in to pitch the final three innings and after a few walks that cost him a couple of runs he settled down to finish up strong giving up only two hits in his three innings of pitching. 'The MoJack offence contin- pop. And a special thanks to our fans who supported us. Greenbank also thanks Bob Jamieson for travelling to Greenbank every Tuesday to do our umping. You are a good um- pire and the Pee Wee/Squirt boys were lucky to have you do this difficult job. As convenor of the Pee Wee/ Squirt boys my job was made a lot easier with coaches Frank Trainor, John Bacon and Chris Dunn. Thanks for a great sea- son. On behalf of the Pee Wee/ Squirt boys and coaches I would like to say with people like Dave Kay, Carolyn Best, Allynne Jones and all our umpires, Port Perry would not have minor ball and we do appreciate all your time and effort. ued to roll along picking up an- other eight runs to finish the game off with a 16-2 win. Carry- ing the big bat for the MoJacks was Jason Best picking up four singles. Also hitting for the Mo- Jacks were Jeff Clarke, with two singles and a homer; Matt Kay and Doug Short, a double and a single each; Brad Morton, two singles; Jason Logan, a homer and single; and Tim Fitz- patrick, Owen St. John and Darryl Moase, a single each. After losing six of their first eight games this season the Mo- Jacks got things going in the second half of the schedule fin- ishing up with a respectable 10 wins, eight losses and three ties. Judy MacSween (Perfect Heat- ing) for their dedication and companionship throughout the season. A big thanks too to the umpires, parents, sponsors and other individuals who came for- ward to assist in any way and to my wife, Linda for assistant coaching. It was appreciated. Special mention will be made here as well of the magnificant job Judy MacSween did as con- venor this year and for her friendship. . As for my guys...all of them, they deserve the biggest thanks of all for their talents, guts, de- termination, sportsmanship, leadership, dedication, sinceri- ty and resolve. They are all win- ners! } This season, mainly because of them and their efforts was truly a winning one and one which I will remember fondly for years to come. I was lucky to be their coach.
