20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 25, 1992 Annual Blackstock Fair set for this weekend Blackstock News by Joyce Kelly Fair week certainly started out in excellent manner with the program on Sunday evening with the Torchmen, a -gospel singing group from St. Cathe- rines. A large crowd thoroughly enjoyed the music and the an- tics of this fun-loving men's group. Those who missed the evening certainly were the los- ers. Preparations will be under- way all week for the community centred Blackstock Fair on Sat- urday with the Demolition Der- by on Friday evening. Any members of the community who are not directly involved are in- vited to come to the fair grounds to help with the countless set- up tasks any evening. Wes Pearce celebrated his 91st birthday last Saturday with a party of 17 relatives in attendance at Haugen's. Wes has now taken up residence in Room 24 at the Port Perry Villa. He certainly does enjoy visitors. Happy birthday. Mrs. McArthur of Peterbo- rough will be visiting Black- stock this Saturday (fair day). Any friends who wish to see her may call at the McArthur/ Martyn home from 2-4 p.m. On Sunday afternoon a Tripp family picnic and bridal shower was hosted by Jackie James at the beautiful new home of Todd and Lori-Lee James in honor of Angela Nogg and her groom-to- be Corey Barr. About 60 family members attended. After Ange- la and Corey opened the many beautiful gifts, they thanked everyone for the best wishes and gifts. Dolly and Ken Lee has had Dolly's sister Carol spending a few days with them. Sympathy is extended to Carol on the re- cent loss of her husband. Over the weekend Peter and Anne Vanderheul visited their son Boyd Vanderheul who has moved from Newfoundland to Ottawa. There were eight tables at the Tuesday evening euchre party with the following winners: Ruby Smith, Lorna Swain, Merv Storrie, Norman Rohrer, Doreen Ferguson, George Harper and Ruby Cochrane. Draws were won by Norman Rohrer, Charlie Campbell, Reta Storrie and Lorna Swain. Helen Bradburn has just re- cently returned from an enjoya- ble DeNure Tour to the Mari- time provinces with her friends Jean Slemon, Dorothy Beach and Ann Taylor. Rebecca, who has been taking lessons from Janice White and has been studying plano for seven years, scored a perfect 100 in her recent Grade 2 theory exam. Scott, a stu- dent of Paula Copithorn who has been studying piano for eight years, also did extremely well in his Grade 2 theory exam, scoring 99 on the test. Both Rebecca and Scott are un- sure of where their studies will lead them. They plan to continue their studies, but don't forsee a career in piano. Residents take advantage of sunny days to enjoy outdoor activities Everyone appreciated the fi- nal weekend summer and praised the fact they were not in Florida or southern Alberta with hurricanes and snowfalls. For a couple of weeks we no- ticed our mail delivery being later than ususal. But we soon learned our faithful mail car- riers Clara and Joe Dowson were taking a two-week, well deserved vacation. Although he and his wife farm a little they live in the town. Joe drove the tiring trip but they enjoyed perfect weather and a score of changes. It was great to have a family re-union with Clara's brother and his wife as well as their daughter and her three children from is under way.
