By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A big battle is brewing over the name of a little street in Cae- sarea. The Township of Scugog's de- cision to change the name of Caesar Lane in Caesarea to Wa- shago Bay Lane has drawn the ire of a long-time resident of the area. In aJuly 24 letter to the town- ship, Allan Edwards, a full-time resident of Caesar Lane, pre- sented his opposition to the change. Mr. Edwards feels the change 18 an unnecessary expense which neither the township nor < 0 : millar ights AUDITIONS A CHILDREN'S THEATRE GROUP (ages 9yrs. - 18yrs.) will be holding auditions on Saturday, September 19th, 1992 at Town Hall 1873, Port Perry. According to township admin- istrator Earl Cuddie, council re- ceived a formal request from the Washago Bay Community Club to change the name to Washago Bay Lane. He said the 22 names on the petition represented enough of an interest for the change to be considered. But Mr. Edwards feels that as a full-time resident of the com- munity he should have been consulted on the matter. Mr. Edwards is also con- cerned the new name may enter into litigation in a dispute of a common right of way currently ensuingin the community. "We are fearful that this may enter into litigation and we do not want the new name, Washa- go Bay Lane, associated with ourrightofway," he states. Despite the opposition the Washago Bay Community Club wants the name changed to rep- resent the historical signifi- cance of the area. According to Myrna Vosylius, secretary of the club, Washago 1s named after Pete Washago, a native Indian who settled in the area in the 1920s. Ms. Vosylius xs A garden party was held Sunday afternoon to help Bill and Birdie Bonnell celebrate thelr 65th wedding anniversary. The Prince Albert couple have lived in the community for about 50 years. The couple marks their anniversary on Thursday, Aug. 27. Opposition mounting over plans to rename street in Caesarea says there is still evidence of his residence in the area. In order to perpetuate the name o. the early settler, the residents forwarded a petition signed by 22 people requesting the name change. This name change was grant- ed at a recent council meeting, but subsequent opposition has forced a publichearing. Mr. Cuddie says the matter will be discussed on September 28. | du Jim & Jean Rankin wish to announce the marriage of their son, Daniel James Rankin to Catherine Melinda Jean Clinton, daughter of Dave & Bonnie Holmes of Peterborough.
