10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 1, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Tour of General Motors bia silbdbued Rear quarter panels are removed and stacked after being stamped. Almost every day 3,000 vehicles from one of the three General Motors plants in Oshawa roll off the end of the assembly line ready for delivery to thousands of dealerships across Canada and the United States. In Oshawa, a labor force of more than 8.000 men and women assemble Buick Regals, Chevrolet Luminas or one of the trucks built in the truck plant at a rate of approximately one vehicle per minute. The Star was given a tour of the Oshawa assembly plant last week, and the photographs on this page attempt to show assembly from the earliest stages through to the final product. Science cannot unravel this dilemma, since it is impossible to design an experiment involving hu- man beings with 500 variables. However, there is scientific proof that these agents are "harmful to the human health." It has been calculated that "there are over 200,000 deaths per annum from pesticides." The American National Acade- my of Science has "estimated that 20,000 cases of cancer per year are caused by these agents." In 1988, Health and Welfare Canada linked the common weed killer 2-4D to cancer of the lymph glands, called non- Hodgkin's lymphoma. "In 1986, the U.S. Medical Association has already "linked the use of 2- 4D to the development of non- Hodgkin's lymphoma and with soft tissue sarcoma in Kansas farmers. October 1990, National Can- cer Institute of America again linked the use of 2-4D with non- Hodgkin's lymphoma. It was found that Nebraskan farmers had a "three-fold" increased chance of developing non- Hodgkin's lymphoma if they had been exposed to 2-4D for 20 or more days per year. "In 1990, approximately 5,800 Canadians will have de- veloped non-Hodgkin's lympho- ma after being in frequent con- tact with 2-4D." We need to move away from the use of these agents. Some municipalities have begun to re- alize the hazards of pesticides. Mississauga, Elora, Montreal and Ottawa have stopped spraying. If other municipalities can stop spraying then why can't Scugog? It would be much healthier for everyone involved. Why not check into the other means of destroying noxious weeds, it has worked for other places. In the end it may be cheaper than purchasing and using harmful chemicals. However small the amount of chemical being used isn't the question. It is that small amount being used by more than one person and one munic- ipality that causes a total body overload in some people. As time goes on and the more chemicals that are used, people will become sicker and sicker and possibly even die. For the general public's inter- est, many lawn and weed com- panies use 2-4D when lawn spraying for weeds as well as Dursban for an insecticide. Dursban is known to cause de- layed neuropathy leading to limb dysfunction. Ontario Hy- dro uses 2-4D to spray hydro poles and the grass area around the hydro stations. I also checked and Port Perry's waterfront (Palmer Park) has not been sprayed in the last two years. This is a step in the right direction. With the increase of asthma, allergies and other auto im- mune diseases maybe we should all think about a chemi- cal clean-up in our own back- yards.
