PORT PERRY STAR Tuesday, September 1, 1992 Adding a family room As the days get cooler and less time is spent out- doors, a family room can provide an indoor haven for you and your family. A family room is a great addition to any home be- cause it can be used for many different purposes. It can be a playroom for children or a place to enjoy hobbies and games such as painting, pool or table tennis. It can also be used as a party room to hold birthday celebrations and family gatherings. Or it can be a great room for watching television, read- ingor listening to music. If you're interested in building a family room, how the room will be used should play an important role in determining where it will be located. For ex- ample, if it will be used for large parties, it would be convenient to locate it near the kitchen; other- wise, it should have its own facilities for serving Member Oshawa 8 District Real Estate Board Member Lindsay 8 District Real Estate Board [1d & "PORT PERRY PLAZA food. It may even be worth having a separate en- trance for this type of room so guests don't have to walk through the house to get to it. If the room is being used for a quiet hobby, its loca- tion isn't as important. On the other hand, if it's be- ing used for woodworking or drum practice, it would be best to keep it away from bedrooms or other areas of the house where family members would be disturbed. The design and location of the room will also de- pend on when it will be used. If it's to be used mainly in the winter when it's too cold to spend time outside, it's a good idea to supply additional heat ducts from the furnace. Air conditioning should also be considered if the room will be used throughout the year. Also keep in mind that natural light and ventilation will help brighten up the room and make it more inviting. The Basement A common assumption is that the best place for a family room is in the base- ment, but this is not nec- essarily true. The low ceil- ings, lack of sunlight, dampness and stairs can make the basement the worst location. Base- ments are usually difficult to get to and to get out of, Turnto Page 4 (816) 985-9777 FAX 985-9161 AT PORT PERRY 1850 Circa Victorian.
