BHI, PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10 Vanedward Orive, Port Perry 985-8474 "Serving the Community since 1976" Enrolment figures reach 4,200 at township schools By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star More students are enrolled in Scugog Township schools this year than ever before. According to figures from the nine township schools there are 4,197 children enrolled in the system for the 1992-93 school year. This is an increase of 177 pupils over the previous year. Port Perry High School has seen the greatest increase in students. According to vice-principal Les Dow the school registered 90 new students and only lost about 20. The total enrolment for the high school is 1,170, up from the 1991 September total of 1,043 and the 1,063 regis- tered students in 1990. Mr. Dow credits the unstable economy for the increased en- rolment. The poor economy may be the reason more kids are stayingin school, he added. Cartwright High School has seen a decrease in its enrolment for the 1992-93 school year. The enrolment figures have dropped from 186 to 165. R.H. Cornish Public School saw a slight decrease in stu- dents. Its enrolment has dropped from 731 to 725. The case 18 the same at Epsom Pub- lic School. The enrolment has dropped from 132 to 129. Prince Albert Public School has seen a slight decrease in students as well. The school has 202 registered pupils this year, down from 207 1n 1991. S.A. Cawker, Cartwright and Greenbank Public Schools have each seen a slight increase in student body. Cawker's enrol- ment has increased from 615 to 635, Cartwright's from 547 to 560, and Greenbank's enrol- ment is up from 131 to 135 this year. The Scugog Christian School has seen no change at all as the school's enrolment is steady at 62 students. Immaculate Conception Catholic School is the only other school to see a noticeable in- crease in students. The Fipipes show 414 students enrolled this year, up 30 from June of 1991. A spokesperson for the school said the increase in children is due to large enrolment figures in the junior kindergarten level. Speed won't be lowered A request by Taylor Ford Mercury to have the 50 km speed zone on Highway 7A extended westerly past his place of business has been turned down by the Ministry of Transportation. Peter Dorton, traffic analyst informs council there experi- ence with speed zones shows motorists do not generally reduce their operating speeds when arbitrary speed limit reductions are imposed. He says the majority of motor- ists travel at speeds for which they feel most comfortable, with only the occasional motorist slowing down according to a lower speed limit. Call Cathy 434-1383 "The 50 km/h speed zone most accurately reflects the point at which motorists are reducing their operating speeds, and takes into account that the built-up area of Port Perry is being approached," he says in a letter to Mr. Cuddie. Currently, the 50 km/h speed zones starts about 135 metres west of the Queen Street signal- ized intersection. Taylor Ford is located approximately 200 meters west of the intersection and is located in an 80 km/h speed zone.
