Walter Pitman, chairman of the Interim Waste Authority's Board of Directors, announced Monday that the timetable for the release of the short list of candidate landfill sites has been revised. The authority must defer the announcement to late Novem- ber to allow more time to evalu- ate the large volume of informa- tion received through the public consultation process. The Interim Waste Authority (IWA) is a crown agency of the Ontario Government. It was created in April 1991 to search for and select three environ- mentally-suitable landfill sites in the Greater Toronto Area -- one in Peel to serve its disposal needs; one in Durham to serve its needs; and one in Metro To- ronto/York to serve their com- bined needs. "Public consultation is a criti- cal component of the site selec- tion process because it allows for the two-way flow of impor- tant information about candi- date sites," Mr. Pitman said. "So farit has been working ex- tremely well, in fact, it has been overwhelming." Over the summer, hundreds of individuals and groups have provided valuable information and views to the IWA. Publicin- put at the Landfill Information Centres accounted for more than 1,000 letters, almost 2,000 telephone calls and more that 100 briefs. "We want to ensure the site search teams have adequate time to evaluate all of this infor- mation through field verifica- tions and tests, and to incorpo- rate it in the study conclusions," sald Erv McIntyre, IWA general manager. "Field verifications would not normally be carried out at this stage, however, the public con- siders them important. For that reason, the IWA is carrying out field verifications for all three site searches," he added. The IWA is expediting the technical studies to minimize the time that sites remain on the long list. It expects to re- lease the short list of candidate MACKEY, BAILEY & KORB BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS Saturday Mornings - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Oshawa Rd., Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumber Building 985-7391 sites, together with technical re- ports, appendices and public consultation reports in late No- vember.
