Ce Rt | EC mE oe wr (oan "I de "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" : PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 22, 1992 - 9 Pos Yvonne Christie spoke at the United Empire Loyalists' Asso- ciation of Canada (Upper Canada Branch) annual Thanksgiving Country Dinner held at the Head United Church at the Scugog Shores Museum Village on Thursday evening. Mrs. Christie talked about "Aunt Lizzie's Diary", a journal of everyday events compiled by her husband John's great aunt Elizabeth Christie during her lifetime. Lizzie's diary revealed By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star The events that shaped the life of one Scugog Township woman were the topic of discus- sion at the United Empire Loy- alists of Canada (Upper Canada Branch) Thanksgiving Country Supper. Guest speaker Yvonne Chris- tie read passages from the diary of her husband John's great aunt Elizabeth Christie. Aunt Lizzie started the diary in 1867 when she was 23 years old, Mrs. Christie told the Star. "She kept it up until about a year before she died," Mrs. Christie said, adding there were only a few entries in 1943. She was 100 years old when she passed away in February 1944. Aunt Lizzie recorded "the events of the days as they went by," Mrs. Christie said, adding entries were not made every day. "She only wrote when she had the time." There are a couple of large gaps in the diary. The first gap was in the late 1800s when she didn't record anything for more than a decade. It waa during that time that Aunt Lizzie suf- fered two catastrophes. A ro- CMHC 5 SCHL mance fell apart at the seams and her brother Duncan died. No entries could be found be- tween the years of 1911 and 1919. Mrs. Christie believes these diaries must have been lost or destroyed because dur- ing that period Aunt Lizzie, a highly religious woman, trav- elled to the Holy Land and it seems unthinkable that she wouldn't have recorded the trip. Although there were many reasons why she may have started recording the daily oc- currence of her rural family life, Mrs. Christie believes the strongest motivator was Aunt Lizzie's desire to improve her handwriting. "She was very conscious of having a bad script," Mrs. Christie said. Over the years, Mrs. Christie has made a hobby out of tran- scribing the diary. "It's like translating a foreign language," Mrs. Christie said. "I don't know if I'll ever get it com- pleted." To date, she has completed up to about 1904. When the project is complete, Mrs. Christie anticipates a copy of the diary will be handed over to the museum for historical ref- erence.
