Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Raise the Flag Day in Scugog Township raised little attention 'Saturday morning as a handful of dignitaries and a small group of residents watched as the Canadian signature flag was unfurled and raised in Palmer Park. But for those attending, the brief ceremony and hoisting of the huge signature flag was a proud and emotional moment. After a few comments from Mayor Howard Hall and Kinsmen National President Dave Robinson, representatives of the township and Port Perry High School unfurled the multi- colored signature flag and pulled it up the flagpole. Brisk winds during the cere- mony proved to be advanta- geous as the gigantic flag waved proudly in the cool September breeze revealing the small Canadian flag surrounded by a large white band and thousands of local signatures. Mayor Howard Hall accepted the flag from Mr. Robinson, which he said flew in Peneticton B.C. earlier this year. Mayor Hall said they hope to have a container made for the flag, and then allow schools or local organizations to use it for dis- plays or special occasions. "I'd like to see it become an annual event raising the signa- ture flag on Canada Day," the mayor told the Port Perry Star. Mr. Robinson also presented Raise the Flag Day in Scugog the township with a limited edi- tion print, depicting two child- ren signing a large signature flag. The print was painted by Deborah Rothwell. Mayor Hall accepted the print and said it would find a place in the council chambers of the Scugog municipal office. Attending the official ceremo- ny were two representatives of Port Perry High School stud- ent's council, president Chris Brozina and vice president Melissa Rudy, Durham Bd. of Education trustee Bobbic Drew, Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie, councillors Marilyn Pearce, Ken Carruthers and Ken Gadsden and a small group of interested residents. Earlier this year, students from the high school raised enough money to erect a new flag pole in Palmer Park. The pole was dedicated in April dur- ing the Kinsmen Club's Proud to Be Canadian Flag Tour celebrations. Student council president Brozina said he was pleased to see the students get involved with this special occasion and that being part of the event made him proud to be Canadian. "It's good to see this Canadian and community spirit," Ms. Rudy said. Following the ceremony, the signature flag flew for about an hour before being removed for safe keeping and replaced with a new Canada flag. 19 hectares (47 acres) in size address and postal code.
