In a unanimous decision, council rejected the plans for a large retirement home to be built at the corner of Queen and Ottawa Streets. Plans called for a 42-unit, 29,676 square foot building for seniors. More than 50 residents, most surrounding the proposed prop- erty, attended a public meeting last week to oppose the site. They feared the facility would have an adverse effect on the surrounding community. Jim Griffin, who represented the residents, estimated the val- ue of a $200,000 home could drop by as much 30 per cent. Although council rejected the application, it wanted to send a clear message to the developers that it was the location and not the idea which was being reject- ed. "It's the right idea, but in the wrong location," said Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie.
