The Guardian Angels, as they are called, are knitting bonnets, mitts and booties for the pree- mies. Along with expert medical and nursing care, these small babies need clothing to survive their frail, low-birth rate. Premature babies are vulner- able to losing body heat due to the little amount of fat needed to provide insulation. Most of that heat is lost through the hands, feet and head. Communities across Ontario have welcomed the program and will provide a reliable sup- ply of clothing for all premature babies. The knitted sets help local hospitals which are directly in- volved with the program, as well as those hospitals outside Ontario which 'have neo-natal units. Clothing for these small ba- bies are not as readily available to mothers as those of other siz- es. The Guardian Angels have completed more than 10,000 sets of booties, mitts and bon- nets to date. All Guardian Drug Stores throughout Ontario are issuing the patterns to volunteer knit- ters. Once sets are completed they can be dropped off in bins at the stores. From there the sets are distributed to neo-natal units. Those wishing to help in the project, but do not know how to knit, can help by making a dona- tion of wool to be used by the Guardian Angels. Members of Guardian Angels live at home, as well as in sen- iors residences and long-term care institutions. For a whole five months I was allowed to stay with Janet and Dale Van Camp, their relatives and friends, and to enjoy life in Canada. Now I know why my fa- ther, who worked on Merrill and Norma Van Camp's farm some 30 years ago, sang such high praises of Canada and the people that live there. I shall do the same - because I enjoyed my stay there so very much. Everyone in Blackstock was very kind, so that I soon felt at home. With Aillen Van Camp 1 had a chance to visit the eastera part of Canada, and through Marie and Bob Attfield got te know Vancouver. All in all I had a wonderful, memorable time! I even feel that - with the kind as- sistance of everyone around me - I have somehow managed to get the hand of the English lan- guage. I should. like to take this op- portunity to thank everyone who helped me, and hosted me, and made me feel welcome dur- ing the period of my stay.
