"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Real Estate Section - Wednesday, October 14, 1992 - 5 Bulbs must be planted in the fall (From page 1) ed before the soil freezes solid, is to plant them in containers for forcing in the home. To do this, the homeowner must have an area or facility where the bulbs will undergo their "simulated" winter for about 10 to 14 weeks. The area could be a shallow pit dug near the foundation of the home, and covered with straw, chipped styro- foam, or leaves to keep it from freezing, or the facil- ity might be an old refrig- erator in the basement where the bulbs can be stored, planted in their containers. The important part of the storage is that the temperature be main- tained not higher than about nine degrees Cel- cius (48 F) and that it nev- er go below a degree or two below freezing. The bulbs may be planted in any type of soil, including sand or bagged planting soil, and the planting me- dium, whatever it is, need only barely cover the tips of the bulbs, so the con- tainers may be very shal- low. Bulbs may be crammed into the con- tainers so they are almost touching each other, and actually touching the in- side of the container all around. The planting me- dium must be moist all during the forcing and the area completely dark. When white spikes of foliage begin to appear, and the container is full of roots (some small roots should begin growing though the hole in the bot- tom of the container), it's time to bring the contain- ers into the living room of the home. They should be exposed to light gradual- ly, and the cooler the room where they grow, the longer will be the display of bloom. If you have bulbs that you or a friend will not be able to plant outdoors, why not try forcing them in a cold room or refriger- ator. You'll have an early spring when they come into bloom about two or three months after you _plant them as suggested here. One outdoor gardening chore which may still be possible in many areas of Canada is late autumn fertilizing of the lawn (us- ing a winterizer fertilizer especially designed for late autumn of early win- ter application -- ask your garden centre). Such fer- tilizers will have a formu- lation such as 12-3-5, but most importantly, at least 90 per cent of the nitrogen (the element that feeds the foliage, and always the first number of the formula on the container) available in an organic or long-lasting form. Another excellent late autumn project is digging the vegetable garden and annual flower beds. Espe- cially if the soil is a heavy clay, these should have a thin layer of horticultural lime powdered over them before digging. You might also want to spread a layer of leaves that you composted from last au- tumn, or even a few newly fallen leaves, before turn- ing the soil. Use a garden spade and turn the soil over to the spade's depth, leaving the soil in large clods, rather than break- ing it down into a fine tilth as you would in the spring for planting. The winter frosts will attack the clods of heavy clay and make it easier to work in the spring. The lime is a soil conditioning agent too. One final garden chore you may have overlooked, according to the Canadi- an Garden Council, is the installation of nylon mesh protectors over your tall, conical evergreens, These will protect your lovely ev- ergreens from damage caused during ice storms, or when loads of heavy snow falls. Garden cen- tres now also sell burlap from rolls for use in pro- tecting plants such as rho- dodendrons and other tender evergreens from drying winter winds. This is far superior to virtually any other material that is often seen being used, particularly in urban are- as. The use of clear or opaque plastic, such as garbage bags, to "protect" plants from the winter is an absolute "no no." Often such wrapping with plas- tic will cause more dam- age to the plants than it will prevent. What hap- pensis that during bright, sunny, winter days, heat builds up inside the plas- tic wrapping and some plants begin to grow. Then, on a cold night, this new growth dies quickly, and when the wrapping is removed in spring, there may be some dead shoots that have to be removed. Burlap is the best pro- tection for tender plants, but be certain to ascertain from your local garden centre, just which plants what you grow actually require such protection. Many homeowners spend Anwember of the Sears lnancial Network a great deal of time and money protecting plants that do not need any pro- tection, other than per- haps some nylon mesh to hold the foliage together. Your garden centre is the place to inquire for the most accurate local data for your garden.
