Chief Cook, a title he has en- joyed for the past 23 years, joined the local fire department in March of 1957. He said he took an interest in the fire department after re- turning from the warin 1945. Although the department did not need any more men at that time, he said he helped the fire- fighters at a few fires before he actually became a full-fledged member of the brigade. Sixty-six-year-old Chief Cook said the department has come a long way over the years. The equipment is becoming more so- phisticated every day, he said. "(The department) is well- equipped now. We have the lat- est in water-rescue equipment also," he said. When he first joined the de- partment there was only one truck, an old air force pumper. In 1962 the department re- ceived its first combination pumper/tanker. The firefighters themselves are more highly trained these days, Chief Cook said, adding "itis more demanding now." His interestin the fire depart- ment was also passed along to his son Robert, who has been a fireman at Hall #1 for 11 years. When Chief Cook first began on the department he said most of its emergency calls were grass and chimney fires, as more people burned wood than they do today," he said. "Extrication was something we never used tobe involvedin," he added. There are more and more aci- dents and ambulance assists Jack Cook these days, which makes it more demanding, Chief Cook said. "The firemen have to know ex- actly what to do at the right time, as well as knowing CPR IN 0)DI0[OY NO) ¢ 5) D3) 9) ON BJ) DJ i DAVES) SEMINAR Select from Friday, Oct. 16 Saturday, Oct. 17 REGISTER NOW! Call Larry Prohaska at 985-3021 or Fred Walker 985-0205 15258 Simcoe Street, Port Perry. IReggiisiter Now and First-Aid." He said thinking back over the years there are a lot of fires that come to mind, but the worst he remembers was a call the de- partment assisted on in Ux- bridge when a store burned down on the main street. "There have also been a lot of bad barn fires over the years," . he added. With the retirement of both Chief Cook and Chief Ray Gould of Hall #2, Don Steele has taken over as part-time fire chief for the township fire department. The bringing together of the two halls into one distinct de- partment was definitely some- thing that was needed, Chief Cook told the Star. "The part-time fire chief was necessary. It is a whole new ball game now but things will work out," he said. "(The firemen) have always co-operated with me and I hope they will with Don. I wish Don well in his new duties," Chief Cook said. After one week of retirement itis easy to see Chief Cook miss- es the activity at the fire depart- ment. "It is a change. [tis quite a let down. I miss all the fellows," he said. Last Monday evening the members of the Scugog Fire De- partment Hall #1 held a party in both Chief Cook's and Deputy Chief Charles Lown's, (who re- tired earlier this year after 35 years), honor. The two retired men were pre- sented with engraved watches as a momento of their many years of dedicated volunteer service to the community. Fall leaf pick-up Fall leaf pick-up will once again be offered to residents of Port Perry and Prince Albert. For five consecutive Wednes- days beginning October 21 the township will be picking up leaves contained in clear gar- bage bags. A bin will also be available at the transfer station on Regional Road 8 for drop off. The leaves for this drop-off must be collect- ed in either clear bags or depos- ited in the bin.
