iki E NN: --p "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 20, 1992 - 9 i i {) -------- > Lehers io the editor To the Editor: So Canadians are getting a referendum on the new consti- tutional deal Oct. 26. I think elections every four years give the electorate a better chance to judge the past performance of a government. It seems the Con- servatives are attempting to test the mood of Canadians this fall without any risk to their present power status, or per- haps practicing appeasement using an idea from another par- ty. Will Canada be better served with "Referendum Rule?" I think not. A referendum is deci- sive but its results can divide a country faster than the issue in the first place. There are good parts and weaknesses in the new "deal." But the politicians involved in both making and selling this deal are wrong. This is the time + Don't rush decision for those same people to stop pushing Canadians toward yes especially with some of the ri- diculous reasons such as the ec- onomic or political collapse of Canada. Threats like these do not intimidate me but rather, cause me to become more criti- cal of the proposal. Do not rush to decide until Oct. 25. Keep listening to Cana- dians and share your own views with them. Do Canadians really need "more" politicians or per- haps just less politicians "more willing" to listen to their con- cerns? Forget about what the doomsters say but ponder this question: Will my ideal Canada more likely develop with or without this deal? Now there is your answer. Glenn L. Malcolm, Nestleton. Vote no and protect your children's rights To the Editor: This land of ours "Canada" has been defended by millions of Canadians - all willing to die for this land. Thousands died for "this land." If the Charlottetown Accord is approved it means an end to the 'protection of our rights to own property." This right has been enshrined in the charter of rights for decades and now it will be left out by the accord process. Canadians in every walk of life owe it to our fallen com- rades and to those who survive, to see that the battle they fought was for good reason. Surely our property rights and land rights cannot be erased by a handful of compromising poli- ticians. Vote "NO" and protect the property rights of yours and your children. Doug Wilson, Oshawa One last word To the Editor: Just a last word before we call it quits. Considering the huge effort by all concerned to ham- mer out this Constitution, the fact that 10 premiers are in agreement of it, the prime min- ister, the leaders of the opposi- tion (federal and provincial), the native people's leaders plus an immense number of leaders in business, industry, educa- tion, etc, surely, an affirmative vote would be the best choice. Granted, it is less than per- fect but with the diversity and aspirations of the people in- volved 1n the process, it 1s at least acceptable. Sincerely, N.R.
