And to prove his point, Dr. Price will speak on this topic at the Head Church on October 22 for the Lake Scugog Historical Society. With the use of slides and pictures, he will focus on furnishings before 1900. Dr. Price believes furniture tells a lot about the early set- tlers in the area and their atti- tudes. "There was more of a pride back then," he said. As an example, Dr. Price says in the past people "built furni- ture", but toaay they "make" it. He says this reflects in the pride of craftsmanship and value of the piece. Dr. Price also believes study- ing a way a person lived and their homes, is a far better gauge of social history than a great battle or other political events. "It's a way of life," he says. "It's social history of everyday life." Dr. Price says he won't have to go far to find examples of so- cial history for his work as there are a lot of good examples in the area. He says there are hun- dreds of examples in antique books on the market that fea- ture Scugog-areaitems. There are few people more knowledgeable than Dr. Price to discuss the subject as he has been involved in the study of furnishings for more than 25 years. He first became involved in antiques when he was seeking items to furnish his rented home in Brooklin. Back then buying antiques was cheaper than purchasing new items. Dr. Price says he developed friendships with many of the collectors who got him hooked on collecting. Today the Price's home in Manchester is filled with antique furniture. He and his wife also lend a lot of their art to the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, which features the 1,000-piece "Price Collection." October is Community Care awareness month By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Home Support and Mental Health Programs are being highlighted during Community Care Awareness Month in Octo- ber. The Durham Region Commu- nity Care Association has been servicing seniors and adults with special needs for 15 years. More than 1,100 volunteers provide these practical neigh- borly services to the more than 3,700 people in the local commu- nities, so they may remain more independent. Home Support volunteers provide services such as local and long distance transporta- tion, cleaning and home help, delivery of Meals on Wheels, grass cutting, snow removal, minor home repairs, yardwork, errands, income tax services, home visiting and telephone se- curity checks, office, foot care, luncheon dates, receptionists and helpers and information and referral services. In Scugog Township there are 140 Home Support Volunteers. These services were broken down last year as follows: 4,016 transportation calls, 130 home- maintenance tasks, 95 home help calls, 2,137 telephone reas- surance, 1,317 information and referrals, 54 errands and es- corts. [Last year these volunteers completed 13,040 tasks, con- tributing 8,129 hours to their neighbors. The number of tasks was up from 1990's total of 11,987. Friendly visitor tasks were also up dramatically over the year. In 1990-91 volunteers made 70 visits compared to 162 in 1991-92. The need for Community Care 18 expected to increase in the coming years. It has been estimated the number of seniors and disabled adults in Durham Region will increase by 74 per cent. The av- erage age of a home support clientis 83 years.
