The Durham Rowing Club is interested in using the waters of Lake Scugog as its long distance training facility on weekends. According to Mayor Howard Hall, the club has contacted him to investigate the possibility of establishing such a facility. They are looking into an area near Kent's Bay. He says the lake appeals to them as the calm waters makes it ideal conditions for rowing. Permanent lanes would have to be fixed in the lake, marked by buoys or flags in the water. Theclubis also seeking aloca- tion for a shell storage unit near the site. This land provided by the township, would be on a cost recovery basis. In a letter to council, the Scu- gog residents Mike Maher, a rowing coach, and Charlotte Hale, a former rower, would provide instruction to area boys and girls interested in the sport. The facility would be utilized by the area students during the week days and by the club on weekends. They claim the establishment of such a club would help gener- ate interest in the! popular wa- tersport. Mayor Hall says establishing such a facility on the lake could provide a number of benefits to the area. Not only would it give the students a chance to sample the sport, but it may inject need- ed revenue into the community as competitors from across southern Ontario flock to the lake. "It's worth taking a look at considering tourism and traffic it would create," he said. He says the club is interested in hosting the Ontario Rowing Championship in the area in 1994. Despite the apparent support of council,Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce, who also serves on the Parks and Recreation Committee, says the establish- ment of such a facility on the lake could pose a number of problems. She gays the depth of the lake would have to be investigated to determine whether markers would be feasible. Also she questions who would be responsible for the policing of the waters after the lanes are established. Despite her concerns, she ex- pressed a willingness to discuss the proposal further with them. Council also agreed that it would not be able to give any fi- nancial backing to the project, but it might be able to provide some space for their storage. Council will study the plan in detail shortly. 4 Durharm Stearn 985-8552 LOOSE RUGS J] BROADLOOM Clearing ypHOLSTERY "8 M Scotchguard ) See us as soon as the on's over.
