"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 27, 1992 - 27 Helen McKean Mrs uby Beare and sisters, Hilda and Elsie attended the 126th Anniversary Service at Newtonville United Church on Sunday. The girls saw the church burn in 1929. Hilda who will be 90 in May, was married in the new church before it was completely rebuilt. It was a very inspiring service and they met many friends who remembered their dad, (Rev. Thomas Wal- lace), who served the three charges from 1924-1936. It was Baptism Sunday at our Sunday service. We enjoyed a sing song before the service with Jill Bradley leading and her mother Mrs. Betty Stone at the piano. The Sunday School group sang "He's Got The Whole World in His Hands" with the congregation joining in to sing "O 'Canada." It really was thrilling and we should be proud of Canada's 125th Birth- day! We welcomed Irene and Brandon, children of Elaine and Doug Watson, also wee Melanie and Stefanie, twin daughters of Sandra and Ron Thomson, who were baptized by Rev. Shep- herd. Mrs. Helen Thomson and Mrs. May Richer are the proud grandmothers who were there to see the twins christened. Rev. Shepherd gave a prayer for Canada from general council. His sermon "The Stages of Spir- itual Growth - Unborn, New- born, Adolescent, Mature and Old" seemed very appropriate, with four children there to be welcomed into our church. Next Sunday, Nov. 1 is the Greenbank Anniversary. The guest speaker is Mr. Marvin Anderson. The November meeting of the Fidelis Unit of U.C.W. will be in the church on Nov. 4 at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Judy Lotta will be our guest. The evening unit meets at 8 p-m. on Nov. 1 in the church. They will be making their Christmas crafts. The regular euchre party will be held on Friday, Oct. 30 in Greenbank Hall. Everyone wel- come. Congratulations to Mr. George Rahm who celebrated his 93rd birthday on the week- end. Many couples from Green- bank enjoyed the "Beef Dinner" at the Prince Albert United Church on Sunday evening. My daughter Donna West has returned to her home in -- yo EL "Don and I did enjoy her visit as we did Dale Ellison's stay for a few days. They seem so very far away but thanks to the tele- phone we can keep in touch. The October meeting of our W.I. was held at the home of Mrs. Fred Pheonix on Oct. 21. The members and five visitors enjoyd the guest speaker, Mrs. Eileen Slute, a member of the Brooklin Master Gardner As- soc. Mrs. Slute gave us the much needed information in taking care, and the prepara- tion for our gardens, getting ready for the cold winter. She also shared with us how to take care of our house plants and the planting of fall bulbs. She also had many helpful hints on gar- dening in general. Greenbank School News by Jim Edwards and Sean Fletcher Grades one, two, and three are doing apple activities. They also went to Port Perry High School last Wednesday for "Spookerama!" Everyone had a great time. Thank you to the high school students. Our cross country team had a cold and muddy run on Wednes- day at Trillium Valley. Con- gratulations to all our school representatives. You ran well. Some of the participants will at- tend the Durham run again this week. Good Luck! The Grade six class had a su- Angie DeJong entered a wedding cake in the Bakery Pro- duction Club of Ontario's 50th Anniversary bakery contest. Mrs. DeJong was still putting the finishing touches on the cake Friday evening when the Star visited her. The cake was taken to Toronto for the contest on Saturday morning. Re- sults were to be made known today (Tuesday). Local entrant in Canada's biggest bakery contest A Port Perry woman has en- tered the biggest bakery contest in Canada. Angie DeJong entered the wedding cake category of the Bakery Production Club of On- tario's 50th Anniversary bakery contest. Results from the contest will bereleased today (Tuesday). [Each entry had to be 100 per cent edible with the exception of the boards, pillars, support wire and netting. The cake had to be pound cake. Mrs. DeJong chose a Cinde- rella theme for her entry, com- plete with edible Cinderella, Prince Charming, and pumpkin coach. The cake and its decora- tions took about two months to complete, she said. The cakes are judged on pres- entation, technique, difficulty, and color and design. Gold, silver and bronze awards are presented to the top three finishers in each of the nine categories. A cash award of $500, $300, and $200 is given to the top winners as well. I'he en- try chosen as best in the show receives an additional $1,000. When the Star spoke with Mrs. DeJong on Friday after- noon, she didn't hold out much hope of winning one of the awards. "This 1s the first time I've en- tered the contest," she said, add- ing the contest draws entries from across Canada and the United States.
