SpE SE " ol tS A 3 savasrsmagnl ¥ 2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 27, 1992 antl ------ "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Recycling program for apartments put on hold By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Plans to extend the recycling program to apartment Duild: ings is not in the cards for this year, says Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie. Some apartment complexes in the Township of Scugog had requested being included in the bi-weekly pick up of blue boxes, but Councillor Christie saysitis Just too costly to include in this year's budget. According to Scugog Clerk Earl Cuddie it would cost $1.13 per unit, every two weeks for pick up. If all 281 apartments in the township were included it would total $8,255.78 per year. "We can't afford to do any- thing this year," Councillor Christie says. But blue box pick up for each: of the 281 units may not be the answer, she says. Instead she suggests the township consider other alternatives such as shared containers among a number of units in the same building or the large recycling igloos. "The expense of every unit pick up is alot over the course of the year," she says. The cost of including igloos is somewhat cheaper. According to Mr. Cuddie, the cost of three igloos for a period of three years is $5,000. But despite the cost savings it appears all do not agree that it may not be the best choice. May- or Howard Hall points to the in- creased incidents of garbage be- ing dumped around the area where the igloos are contained. He is leaning towards the blue box pick up. The matter has been forward- ed to the Finance Committee for consideration in the 1993 bud- get. Join them by putting it all together. Councillor Christie says the region's Works Committee is discussing the possibility of passing the costs of the pick up back to the municipality. If this 1s the case the township will have to consider the entire pro- gram again.
