Ree ET "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" a ---- Treatment of pet unforgiveable To the Editor: I would like to respond to Joy Forbes' letter in last week's Star. Mrs. Forbes was looking for sympathy for her daughter, who disciplined her dog, Birdie, with a "swift kick." She was then annoyed by the conse- quences of her actions. Did they expect the dog to sit still and ignore the temptation of a fresh box of donuts? To treat the dog so dastardly is un- forgiveable. Thank goodness a witness cared enough to report such cruelty. The cost to the taxpayer is negligible if it raises our con- sciousness to the cruel treat- ment of animals by humans, who consider themselves civil- ized. Would this young mother lash out in anger against her two small sons, in the same way they witnessed her treatment of' their pet? Children learn from the ac- tions of adults. I am surprised their grandmother would write to you about this. These people were let off the hook lightly by a $330 fine. The dog will still wag his tail, lick her hand and forget the kick - but will the children? How often do they witness such bad behav- ior? M. Wilson, Port Perry First complaint To the Editor: I am writing in response to the letter published by you in your newspaper last week. Over the many years our Craft Show has been held in the Port Perry High School, this has been the only time we have had a complaint addressed to the editor of this or any other nels aper. Thousands of delighted peo- ple from far and near, eagerly look forward to the day when they can attend our very popu- lar and successful Craft Show. We regret very much that anyone went away disappoint- ed. The parties in question were not turned away or denied ac- cess; merely asked if they could return later when the crowds were a little smaller. Other visi- tors toured our show in wheel- chairs later in the day and I be- lieve thoroughly enjoyed it. Our Girl Guide Organization capably cares for tots and little ones and this is advertised in our fliers. Our desire for the comfort and well-being of the individual in the wheelchair and others, was foremost in our minds on the day of the show. Sincerely, Kathleen Goodway Better plan needed To the Editor: The Oshawa Times (Oct. 16) in an article about Port Perry industries talked to Mayor Ho- ward Hall and credit him with the quote "we don't have an empty store in downtown Port Perry." Could it be that the mayor's Port Perry doesn't in- clude Water Street and Scugog Street? On those two streets anyone can see many commer- cial units patiently await their first lessee or replacement from a previous renter. Mayor Hall states that the re- tail sector has held up well. I too am pleased with the businesses Port Perry has and appreciate a busy "small town" atmosphere close by. However, Scugog counal is precariously perched when con- sidering approval of a large pla- za development on the "Conway and lake front area" east at the 7A causeway. How many of the new" retail stores planned for it are merely moves from estab- lished Port Perry locations? What stores can be attracted to fill up these vacancies? How wise 18 a plan for such a large structure in an area that was marshland a few years ago? Through all the seasons of the year the Port Perry waterfront and lake 18 a beautiful view es- pecially as one drives down to the causeway from the Scugog Island hill. In my opinion the thought of an imposing, ugly, flat-roofed plaza with parking space spread out too close to the lake is repulsive. The possibihi- ty of more fast food outlets will only mean more garbage strewn along the causeway and Cart- wright's road sides to the east. [ appeal to council members and citizens who care about this precious corner of Lake Scugog waterfront to insist on a more appropriate, aesthetic, useful development than the latest proposal. Please don't letit happen! Yours truly, Glenn H.
