"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 3, 1992 - 19 Cross country runners do well It was the 96th Anniversary Sunday in our Greenbank Unit- ed Church. The guest speaker was Mr. Marvin Anderson of To- ronto. He teaches Rural Theolo- gy at Toronto School of Theolo- gy and works with children with physical and development handicaps. The girls groups "Provindence" sang "Daddy's Hands." The choir really were wonderful. They sang "When We Worship Ged Through Mu- sic" and again later "Thy Will Be Done Lord" with Hugh Baird as soloist. Mr. Anderson read a beautiful story to the children of the congregation of a boy asking his grandpa to read him a story of how he came to be named "Boy." His sermon was entitled "When You've Harrowed What I Plowed." Reminding us of all those families who helped this church reach its 96th year. A lunch was served after the service and everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship. The winners at the last eu- chre game were: ladies first - Olive Ormiston, second - Jean Rodd, third - Marlene Blane. Men's first - Doris Hill, second Jean Hunter, third - Harry Hill. Lucky winners of the draws were Noreen Cook, Jean Rodd and Nelson Cole. The next eu- chre will be the Christmas par- tyon Nov. 22. Sympathy of the community 18 extended to Rick and Joanne Trotter and girls to Rick's moth- er Joy in the passing of her hus- band Art Barwell at Victoria Place in Bobcaygeon. Mrs. Doris Hill and daughter Earla enjoyed a trip to Syracuse for three days of shopping and also the dinner theatre. This will be in preparation for the Christmas music. The Fidelis Unit of U.C.W. meets in the church on Wednes- day, Nov. 4 at 1:30 p.m. The Evening Unit meets that day at 8 p.m. in the church as well. They will be doing their Christ- mas crafts. James Richard Powell, baby son of Chris and Marie Powell of Greenbank was received into baptism at the Church of the Ascension Anglican Church in Port Perry on Sunday. Their older children Michael and Amanda stood in as Godpar- ents. Many guests gathered at their home for refreshments, some coming as far away as Cornwall, Bridgenorth, Missis- sauga and Brantford. Each student and Mrs. Pigosso in Grade 1 also received a bag of bulbs from Stephen Norton. We are looking forward to a color- ful, blooming spring. Grades 1/2 are happy to wel- come back Lindsay Young to class. We are glad to see you again. The class has been hav- ing fun working on a Halloween unit. All students dressed in costumes, paraded the gym and sang Halloween songs. Thirty-eight Greenbank cross-country runners compet- ed at an area meet at Trillium Valley on Oct. 21. They compet- ed with determination and good spirits over the hills and through the mud. The nine- year-old boys' team, Matthew Horvell, Tom Kittle, Cory McQuade, Derek Ellicott and Brent Couch placed third. Individual winners were Matthew Horvell (sixth), Mindy Thomson (second) and Kevin Roberts (first), Oct. 27 at the Durham Final meet, Matthew Harvell placed 13th of 113, Ke- vin Robins age seven, won the eight-year-olds race. Mindy un- fortunately was ill with chicken pox but we look forward to see- ing her at track and field. Kevin Roberts also competed at the All Provincial Meet in Burlington. The Junior Boys' and Girls' Volleyball teams are practising hard for the D.E.A.A. tourna- ment on Nov. 26. Thank you to all students and parents who supported the Greenbank and Epsom School libraries at the Book Fair held Oct. 26-29. A special thank you to Mrs. L. Doble and Mrs. R. Manolis for their assistance to Mrs. Atkinson during the fair. Due to your support for our fundraiser, students will enjoy over $400 worth of free books in each library. Super!! The Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has increased its pledge to the building fund. The auxiliary had originally pledged $50,000 to the Stephen B. Roman Wing. They recently increased their pledge to $75,000. Mary Cannon, president of the hospital auxiliary, is pictured presenting the cheque to Gwenyth Thompson, the auxiliary's representative on the Hos- pital Foundation Board.
