See story for details. Firemen evacuate seniors The Scugog Fire Department held a fire drill at the Communi- ty Nursing Home on Saturday morning. Fire Chief Don Steele said the drill was a "walk through" to help prepare firefighters, nurs- ing home staff and residents in the event ofa real fire. Alarms sounded at the nurs- ing home at 9:56 a.m. Nursing home staff immediately began evacuating the 73 residents. Be- cause of the weather, the resi- dents were taken to the dining room. Had it been a real fire, they would have been evacuat- ed outside, Chief Steele said. Firefighters from Hall 1 ar- rived on the scene at 10:06 a.m. and found the fire three min- utes later. The residents were allevacuated by 10:28 a.m. Chief Steele said it was an ex- cellent response time. Although the firefighters knew the drill was taking place on Saturday, they were all at home when the call came over their pagers and had to go to the fire hall before proceeding to the nursing home. He said the drill went "ex- tremely well." "We do have some concerns on a few small points," he said, add- ing the concerns will be dealt with in the department's nurs- ing home pre-plan. In previous fire drills, high school students have been brought in to substitute as resi- dents. He said nursing home direc- tor Edna Goss suggested the residents be a part of the drill, saying the residents would "have a better feeling they would be taken care of." The fire department usually holds a drill at the nursing home every three years. Chief Steele says he hopes to hold an- ° other one in June when the weather is more conducive to evacuating the residents out- doors. mm sage y HIGH EFICIENCY WOODSTOVES & FIREPLACE INSERTS » Solid Cast Iron + + Large Clean Glass * * Easy Ash Removal Drawer - CLOSED MONDAYS Fireplace Plus' Hy Sunday, November 15th 2pm to 4pm ~R.S.V.P z FRAMER'S GALLERY 237 Queen St. Port Perry, 985-2543 Saturday, November 14th & 21st The 1st Port Perry Scouts will be canvassing residents in Port Perry selling Perfect Portions food products.
