The day-long meeting at Thunderbird Golf Course last Thursday was intended to in- clude municipal and regional politicians and administrators in the GTA office's Strategic Ac- tion Plan process. "I hope and I believe that when the short list of sites is identified people will recognize the fact that the Interim Waste Authority is doing this in a very open way and by identifying all the possible candidate sites it has made it a much better pro- cess than the old way of politi- cians deciding behind closed doors where a landfill site should be located." Despite her pleasure over the success of the process, she says she has been disappointed by the public's participation. And criticized the public forits disin- terest in the process until it was too late. She says ample opportunity was given to participate but the residents didn't respond until they realized the landfill site could affect them. "I don't know how we could've done it any better. I thought we had done it as well as we possi- bly could," she said. "But I think that's one of my disappoint- ments that people didn't partici- pate at the earliest opportuni- ties." She blamed the public for the delay in releasing the short list of sites. Originally the list was due to be released in Septem- ber, but was pushed back until the end of November. Scugog Fire Department battles three Halloween blazes KELLY LOWN/PORT PERY STAR Township of Scugog firefighters spent more than sev- en hours battling three major blazes in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 1. The first call to Rebel's Diner came In at 12:31 a.m. and was followed by two house fires at 3:45 a.m. The homes located on the 6th line of Scugog (bottom photo) and Old Simcoe Road were both vacant. The Fire Marshal's Office as well as the Arson Investigation Squad of Durham Region have been called in to investigate. No cause has been given for any of the fires.
