4 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 3, 1992 By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The Township of Scugog is weighing all options in its weed spraying program, says Parks and Recreation Committee Spraying may stop member Marilyn Pearce. Councillor Pearce says all op- tions are being considered by the committee concerning weed spraying, including discontinu- ing the program. Region to conduct sanitary survey of Castle Harbour The Region of Durham will be conducting a sanitary survey of Castle Harbour this month, says an official at the region's Health Department. According to Mike Strachan, a public health inspector, the survey involves bacteriological water samplings, and well and sewage disposal area inspec- tions. A door-to-door survey will be conducted on November 12 where a water sample will be taken. The resident will also be required to fill out a brief ques- PORT PERRY HIGH SCHOOL will hold its annual COMMENCEMENT -- PROGRAM -- : at 8:00 pm Friday, November 6th, 1992 tionnaire. Mr. Strachan says this survey will give the residents an oppor- tunity to discuss problems they may have with their water qual- ity with the region's health de- partment. The survey has been conduct- ed for the past few years throughout the region on a ran- dom basis and is not in response to any problems in the area, Mr. Strachan says. He says water sampling is available free of charge to every homeowner. But Councillor Pearce says it is "a damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario. On the one hand, halting the spraying program would go a long way to protecting the environment and the residents, but on the other hand, the parks will not be as aesthetically pleasing. The township has received calls from various residents ex- pressing environmental con- cerns. They were most con- cerned about the effects it would have on the lake and on their children playingin the parks. Councillor Pearce says they are considering the options based solely on the environmen- tal aspects and not on financial terms. She estimated the town- ship spends between $1,000 and $2,000 per year. One of the biggest concerns of the townshipis that the aesthet- ics of various areas, most nota- bly Palmer Park would be af- fected. She says the township cannot allow weeds to grow out of control in the park which is a major tourist attraction. Recently the township began experimenting with alternative methods of weed control in the park. This included aeration and reduced amounts of chemi- cals. Councillor Pearce says the township will be studying the situation throughout the winter and will make a decision next spring. She doesn't think the de- cision will be to stop spraying to- tally, however. "We're not going to jump into a complete ban, but we will look atother alternatives," she said. In the meantime, in response to various complaints, the town- ship has implemented a policy which restricts spraying close to playgrounds and park benches.
