Mrs. England, her sister Josie (Nott) Bradley and another former stu- dent Dorthea (O'Neill) Koch identified the students and were able to re- member almost everyone. I'd just like to add a few more words on this subject. A forum in Toronto was told last week that, "when it comes to air pollution, the car is Public Enemy No. 1." Also that the air pollution is expected to become a health hazard soon - if people don't start using their cars less. Most of us have heard about Los Angeles and its air. Kids in L.A. suffer a 10-15 per cent loss in lung capacity by the time they finish high school. Apparently many children in Austria are also sick because of car exhaust. The damage we are doing this planet with our cars (yes, I am a shamefaced co-owner of two) is literally astonishing. They make a major contribution to the garbage problem and also contribute heavily to acid rain, ozone depletion and global warming. Planting trees to ab- sorb carbon dioxide makes us feel good, and I don't deny that it is a worthwhile thing to do, but no amount of tree planting will ever be able to make up for all the junk we are pouring into the earth's atmosphere, which, let's remember, is a closed sys- tem. The greenhouse gases we contribute to it today will still be around to make our grand- children sick 30 years and more from now. [ know I'm never going to make myself popular, smack in the heart of GM territory, spreading the bad news about cars. I guess I feel a bit like the child in the fable who told the emperor he had no clothes. It may be a tough message to hear, but somebody has to say it! public enemy Can't we all resolve to make some changes for the sake of our children? Let's minimize our car use as much as possible, stop warming our cars in winter (idling is not only unnecessary, but also bad for the engine!), and turn our cars off when we are sitting waiting. If we re- mind ourselves that it is our children and grandchildren who will benefit (or suffer) from the actions we take (or fail to take) today, perhaps the neces- sary changes will become a lit- tle easier to contemplate.
