a as A a "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 10, 1992 - 13 Choral Society music will be computerized By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star The Scugog Choral Society will be singing to a different beat when their production of "The Gipsy Princess" opens next week. For the first time in the choral society's history, the singers will not be backed up by an or- chestra. That's not to say there won't be any instrumental mu- sic. It will all be played on com- puter. Musical director Tom Millar composed the whole orchestra- tion on computer, and although he has tried the system out dur- ing Millar Lites performances, this is the first time the choral society has tried this approach. Dr. Millar took the score and broke it into individual instru- ments (piano, drums, trumpet, etc.). He then recorded each in- strument on tracks on the com- puter. The process took about six months to complete, but the fin- ished product is a full orchestra sound. He said there were several reasons he chose this route for the production. The availability of musicians and the expense of paying them were the big motivators, Dr. Millar said. "Tt's just too expensive." The computer music program Solicitor General to visit Solicitor General Doug Lewis will be in Port Perry on Satur- day to take part in the Peter Perry Birthday celebrations. The official birthday celebra- tions will begin at 2 p.m. at the municipal offices in Port Perry where the township will com- memorate the 200th birthday of the town's founder with a birth- day cake. Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gads- den says Mr. Lewis will also un- veil the new Township of Scu- gog flag which was recently chosen. Awards and prizes from the flag contest will also be pre- sented. Mr. Lewis was appointed So- licitor General in April, 1991. He has also served as deputy House Leader, Minister of State for the Treasury Board, Justice Minister, Attorney General and Minister of Transport. As Solicitor General of Cana- da, he is responsible for the Roy- al Canadian Mounted Police, the Correctional Service of Can- ada, the National Parole Board, and the Canadian Security In- telligence Service. is "something I have and have used for the Millar Lites group. It'sbeen quite successful." Another advantage is that the singers can take a copy of the music home to practice, he said. "It'slike a modified karaoke." Although the system has its TN WN SALE NOW thru SUNDAY NOV. 15 *EVERY SUNDAY at BIG V advantages, Dr. Millar says there will always be people who have their arguments against it. "Some say it will make each night's performance the same," he says, adding in defence that most people want to hear the music played correctly." = = 0 -- Boxed Dr. Millar, who has volun- teered his time as musical direc- tor for the Scugog Choral Socie- ty for about 10 years, has been working with computerized mu- gic for about two years.
