"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" XL Eaglettes crush Scarborough 11-0 T-- The XL Gas Bar Eaglettes are off to a great start in the 401 Novice C League with a con- vincing 11-0 victory, their third in a row, against the Scarbo- rough No. 1 Novice team. The big red and white ma- chine is firing on all 14 cyclind- ers with all the girls putting out their best effort and each one making an important contribu- tion to the team. This win, al- though against a younger and less experienced first year team, was(most impressive be- cause of the improved play of our first year girls with four new names appearing on the scoresheet. Getting their first points of the season were Rhea Baxter with a solid two-way effort and four assists, Jill Pashley with her first chance to play out in- stead of in goal and a strong skating game and one assist, Shannon Warriner with her best game so far and one assist, and Heather Reid with a chance to play forward and her best ef- fort and one assist. Kristen Waller and Jackie Pashley both came so close to scoring and their hard work and solid posi- tional play will eventually pay off. With Jill playing forward, it was a chance for Janna Ostafi- chuk to play her first game in goal. And she responded with a well deserved shutout, stopping several difficult shots and play- ing her position like a veteran. The young Scarborough goal- ie also played a standout game, making some super stops and kept her team in the game. The Scarborough team has some good players and some younger ones and with more practice and games they will get strong- er and more competitive. A good blend of veterans and rookies gives the Eaglettes a well balanced attack with the older veterans leading the way. And leading the way on Satur- day and playing a strong two way game were Leanne Layzell, three goals, Nicole Virtue, three goals and one assist, Alaina Burger, two goals and one as- sist, Sarah Verschuuren, one goal and three assists, Kathe- rine Cooke, one goal and one as- sist, Stacey Cunningham, one goal, and Alaina Davis with her best game so far and one assist. The coaches and players are also pleased with the great par- ent and fan support they re- ceive at each game, including the away games. The whole team is playing great and ready for their next opponent, and the practices and hard work are paying off. Stay tuned for next week's action. Canadian Tire Midgets Oct. 28 saw the Islanders host Haliburton. Unfortunately the Islanders couldn't seem to get untracked in this one and found themselves down 5-0 late in the third period before Ryan Ridgeway scored with Chad Garvock picking an assist. Fi- nal score b-1 for Haliburton. Nov. 4, after a week's lay-off the Isles hosted Fenelon Falls. This game saw the lead change hands several times before Fenelon Falls prevailed by a score of 6-5. On Nov. 6 the Islanders took part in the Vic Jewell Memorial Tournament in Oakwood. Their opposition in game one was Gravenhurst. The opposition quickly opened up a 2-0 lead as the Isles just couldn't connect on any passing and the legs were in low gear. After the two early goals the Isles haled the opposition off the score sheet and at 1:06 of the third period Mark Cosway connected on a crossing pass from Scott Wylie to make the score 2-1. Assist also to Jason Couloutakis. Then at 5:23 Jeff Vernon tied the score with assists to Mike Stani- land and Steve Stiles. At 7:26 the visitors connected to move ahead 3-2. The Isles kept working hard and pulled the goalie and gave Graven- hurst everything they had and at 9:14 Mark Cosway scored his second goal, unassisted, to tie the score 3-3. The period ended tied and then five minute sud- den victory overtime. The Isles came out strong and at 1:27 of overtime Mark Co- sway scored the winner unas- sisted. Port Perry 4 - Graven- hurst 3. Mark received the MVP and Hat Trick award. Gravenhurst goalie found the loss too much and charged at the Port team and started a messing affair. Gravenhurst team and management showed very poor sportsmanship in this ending. Saturday evening Port played their old friends, the Black Hawks from Oshawa and went down to defeat 5-1. Our lone goal by Steve Stiles from Jeff Vernon and Chad Garvock. Sunday found the Isles in the "C" division against Stroud. Due to work and suspensions from the Friday night fiasco with Gravenhurst the Isles only had 11 players. Stroud with full bench strength soon wore our guys down and skated to 8-0 win. Better luck next time fel- las. Next game Nov. 16 in Little Britain.
