Sl a a "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 17, 1992 - 9 Lette I'S to the editor No one has come to see If dog is abused To the Editor: My mother wrote 'Dog-Gone System' to the editor a few weeks ago and others have made comments on it. My wife lost her cool and kicked the dog (the one and only time). Right from the start she was sorry and upset and we admitted it was wrong. But what cheeses me off 1s that we were put through the court system, after being ac- cused by this neighbor, with no real investigation by anyone, police or Humane Society. The police asked my wife and I to come and see them Sunday morning the day after the fact. I drove from Lindsay right away to find out what the matter could be. They did not write down our complete side of the story, nor did they put it in the right context. They just seemed to accept the neighbor's descrip- tion as fact. We were then told we were being charged with cruelty to animals. No further investigation ever occurred, even though they said they'd called in the Humane Society. If there is an animal in an alleged abusive situation you would think it should be thoroughly investigated to make sure the abuse isn't continuing. To plead quilty in court could have resulted in a $600 fine, a criminal record and no possibili- ty of owning a pet again; which, more than likely, would have been a death sentence to our six-year-old dog with arthritis. We went to court in Oshawa from Lindsay five times before it was settled, with my wife and I spending more than 25 hours in court trying to learn the sys- tem. Neither of us had any pre- vious court experience. If this had gone to trial, our le- gal fees would have been more that $3,000 which indicates to us that you have to have money to prove your innocence in our legal system. We do not blame the neigh- bor, on the contrary, we believe people should report something they think is wrong. We blame the police that seemed too lazy to do a proper investigation, in- stead putting us into a reported- ly, bogged down court system. As I write this, the alleged victim lies by my feet wagging her tail and still no one has come to see if she is being abused!
