"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" | : oo PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 17, 1992 - 21 Day old Island resident IGA Juniors youngest fan to take in Fall Classic at SkyDome By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star At barely more than 24- hours-old Valerie Stowell- Smith not only saw history in the making but made history as she took in Game 4 of the World Series at SkyDome. Born on October 20 at 5:39 p.m. the Scugog Island baby girl was the youngest fan at the Fall Classic and the youngest fan to ever take in a game at the Sky- Dome. Valerie's mother Brenda told the Star her sister-in-law got the tickets for herself and her husband Ken several weeks be- fore the game. Mrs. Stowell- Smith's due date was the day of the game, but she said they fig- ured she either would be late or would have had the baby. "Either way we were sure we could see the game," she added. After giving birth to the couple's child, Mrs. Stowell- Smith said she called her hus- band from the hospital and told him to take a friend to the game. She was sure she would not be attending the game. But, she said, after a good night's sleep, "I woke up and felt great." "I called my husband and told him not to give away my ticket yet, I wanted to go," she said. The doctors at Oshawa Gen- eral Hospital decided Mrs. Stowell-Smith could leave and was discharged at 5 p.m. on Oc- tober 21. Moments later hospital offi- cials decided if she could leave the hospital, they saw no reason why she could not take her new- born daughter with her. Not having anyone to look af- ter their new child, the couple decided to take her along to the game. "I was surprised I was able to go, but more surprised that we had our new daughter with us," she told the Star. She said she was worried about taking her daughter to the SkyDome because of all the activity and the noise. After checking in with the medical staff at the dome, she said they assured her that the exposure to Brenda and Ken Stowell-Smith were surprised Brenda was the noise would in no way harm her child. "They assured me it was fine. The noise would not hurt her ears and her immunities would be the same as mine, so she would be fine," Mrs. Stowell- Smith said. Weeks after the game Sky- Dome officials learned of their youngest fan and have request- able to attend Game 4 of the World Series just one day after giving birth to their daughter Valerie. More surprising was their new daughter also took In the game at the SkyDome along with her parents. | Valerie Stowell-Smith was the youngest fan at the Fall Classic at SkyDome. Sunday, Nov. 16, IGA Juniors travelled to Don Beer Arena to play Pickering. Both teams have been win- less this year, so we knew it was going to be an exciting game. We were right. First period Port could do no wrong. Kim Gardener started the game out with the first goal, assisted by Jenny Storms. Eight minutes later the offen- sive line of Kim, Mary Lee and Heather Lally showed their passing skills, and scored the second goal, assisted by Mary and Heather. Kim was really hot when 28 seconds later scored goal number three, as- sisted by Lynda Payne and Heather. With four minutes left in the. first period, Lynda made an ex- cellent goal in the corner net, assisted by Heather and Jenny. Starting the second period, Sarah Coyne took control of the ring and skated her way through the Pickering girls. However, Pickering was not go- ing to have a repeat of the first veriod. Lindsey Patton con- trolled the ring until Pickering decided it was their turn to score. Stealing the ring from Port, Pickering scored. Our goalie Melissa Dawson played an excellent defensive game, but Pickering did not care. Our defense team of Melissa Pere- man, Terri Rooney, and Kelly Brooks played an excellent game of checking but could not stop Pickering. One minute after the first goal, Pickering scored again. At 7:07 Pickering scored their third goal making the game 4-3 for Port. Three minutes left in the game, Port looked like they may have their first win. Pick- ering's goalie had fallen and was taken out of the game. By new rules this year, when your goalie is out you may put an- other player in the game. With 45 seconds left in the game, Pickering got a breaka- way and scored the tying goal to end the game 4-4. Good game girls.
