In Atom House League action Nov. 13 Robbie Taylor and Joel Phoenix led the winners with two goals each. Chris Medford and Jim Wray were the other Scugog marksmen. John Bacon, Greg Landsell and Devon Symes had strong games along with all their other teammates. * Laurentian played a good game, but suffered a few bad bounces. Goalie Ryan Woods was busy in net and made some good stops. Laurentian scorers were Jeff Harrison and Graham Strickert. The game, 30 minutes of fast paced, end-to-end exciting ac- tion with 28 novice girls fight- ing for control of the ring and supremacy of the ice. The ring, a small, circular, rubberized ring that gets shot, stabbed, stretched, stopped, caught, thrown, flipped, bounced, etc. The purpose, that intangible part of every athe- lete drives them to achieve their very best, to reach for new heights, the competitive nature in everyone to be the best, to be the champions! The outcome, and there is only one when two teams with equal ability and skill, and a strong rivalry, meet and bring out the best in every player, a well deserved 4-4 tie. Both teams, with identical records and a long history of battles, knew it was going to be a close one. Whitby struck right from their opening free pass, catch- ing the XL defense off guard and asleep at the 20 second mark. But that goal woke up the Eaglettes who picked up the pace. At 3:08, Sarah Verschuur- en laid a perfect pass to a wide open Alaina Burger, our birth- day girl, and she found the right corner with a quick shot. Port's next two goals were almost identical set-ups at 5:31 and 6:33 with Janna Ostafichuk as- sisting on both goals by Stacey Cunningham. But Whitby were not to be denied as they struck for goals at 6:47 and 9:34 to tie the game. The game was a real gem to watch for both sides with plenty of action around each net. Both goalies played a solid game and kept their teams in the game. Jill Pashley had another out- standing game in goal, kicking out shot after shot. Whitby went ahead at 5:31 of the second period. but the Ea- glettes just kept coming at them and potted the equalizer at 13:58 on a great'goal by Stacey, her hat trick, with assist to Ni- cole Virtue. All the girls played well, skating, checking and playing their positions. The for- wards, Alaina Davis, Jackie Pashley, Leanne Layzell, Kris- ten Waller and Rhea Baxter kept digging the whole game Novice action Friday,Nov.13 Haugens 2 Port Perry Printing 0 It was a well played game by both teams. For Haugens, Shane Fisher played strongly in goal. Dylan Harper played strongly at centre and Richard Jirka had a good two-way game. For Port Perry Printing Der- eck Ellicott was superb in goal with both Johnny Kyle and Ste- fan Senyk playing strong games. Saturday, Nov. 14 Van Camp 2 Port Perry Printing 2 This was a real exciting match filled with end to end rushes. For Van Camp David Halward and Mark Duncan combined for a goal and Joseph Farquarson played a good de- fensive game. For Port Perry Printing Der- ek Bond had a strong game in goal and Devon Howsam and Mark Lott played great posi- tional hockey with Tyler lee showing up the defense with gome good defensive moves. "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" and had some great scoring chances of their own. The defen- sive, including Katherine Cooke, Shannon Warriner and Heather Reid were kept busy the whole game, against the strong Whitby attack, and gave Jill plenty of protection and were able to clear the ring up the ice. The referees, Denna Eaglettes fight to 4-4 draw Lovering and Kim Poppleton called a good game with no in- fractions, just plenty of good plays, Coach Virtue and Coach Kotarba were pleased with the tie and very proud of their players. Keep up the good work, girls. Next game, Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4:30 p.m. at Scugog Arena against Ajax. See you there. Ivory Forest Belles Sunday, Nov. 15, the Ivory Forest Belles met a very strong" team of Oshawa Debs at the Scugog Arena. The first period ended with Port trailing by one goal. At the 11:48 mark Amy Parliament and Melanie Dem- mer teamed up to execute a passing play which put Karen Kett in position to score Port's first goal. Karen also fired in Port's second goal, unassisted at the 9:47 mark. The score at the conclusion of the first period read 3-2. During the second period Oshawa went on a scoring spree to tally up six additional goals. Juniors Monday, Nov. 9 duel between the YMCA's Leafs and Canadi- ens resulted in a 4-1 victory for the Canadiens. Lindsay Carr was the goalscorer for the Leafs. Reid Harris popped one in for the Canadiens and Tyler Hou- thuys brought the total to four by scoring a hat trick! Intermediates The YMCA's first game of the evening on Nov. 9 was a meet between The Blue Bombers and The Red Wings. The Red Wings were the victors with an 8-1 score. Although The Blue Bombers dug in throughout the game they were only able to score once, this by Ryan Apple- ton. Darryl Dalton fired two in Pee Wee On a rare Friday night ap- pearance at the Scugog Arena the Pee Wee 2 team took to the ice against Sunderland. The first period was a fast paced affair as the Scugog Over- head Doors matched step for step with the "Big Boys" from Sunderland. Shane Savage was especially sharp in net as he turned aside everything Sunderland threw at himin the first. In the second Sunderland fi- nally broke the tie with three Port Perry put forth a valiant ef- fort but could not overcome their goal deficit, although they added two goals to their total. Kim Poppleton initiated a pass- ing play by forwarding the ring to Megan Marlowe, who shot the ring to Amy Parliament, who scored Port's third goal. Amy Parliament also scored Port's fourth goal. Port Perry - played with six attackers dur- ing the last two minutes in a valiant effort to tally a few more points. However, in spite of Port Perry's efforts, the final score read 9-4 in Oshawa's favor. YMCA floor hockey for The Red Wings, Chris Mur- phy scored a hat trick and Jona- thon Rogalski racked up two more goals. Tyler Mark scored one to bring The Wings total to eight. The second game on Nov. 9 was with the Golden Rods and the Mighty Ducks. This close fought game resulted in a 6-5 victory for the Mighty Ducks. Carlos Connell and Eric Bird each scored two goals for the Ducks. Steven Doan and Trevor Doan each scored one more with Trevor popping in the winning goal. Holding up the Golden Rods end were Greg Langford with two goals and Ben Russell, Chris Langford and Brad Em- merson with one each. B action goals to take a commanding lead. Port didn't wilt and contin- ued to keep plugging away. Their efforts were rewarded when Ryan Puckrin scored the lone marker for Port in the third period unassisted. Sunderland rounded out the scoring in the third for a 4-1 vic- tory. Many thanks to the coaching staff for organizing the videos and pizza between the practice and the game, the boys really enjoyed it.
