------------ . Ri a "a m Bl roa ee LE CT NUNN "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Hydro rates to Increase by 8 per cent By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star 'Scugog Hydro customers can expect a rate increase of approx- imately eight per cent next year, says its chairman Irwin Smith. According to Mr. Smith the Hydro Commission voted in fa- vor of the 8.22 per cent increase at arecent meeting. He says the rate was necessary to keep the increase in line with the in- creased rates by Ontario Hydro. Scugog purchases its power from Ontario Hydro, which in- creased the cost by 8.22 per cent. So Mr. Smith says the in- crease being passed on to the customer is a result of Ontario Hydro choosing to increase the rates and not the local service. For the average household it will mean an increase of $6.18 (8.3 per cent) per month. Con- suming an average of 1,000 kilo- watt hours per month, the bill will jump from $74.90 to $81.08. For general service commer- cial the increase is 8.2 per cent boosting the bill from $78.43 to $84.83. Mr. Smith says Ontario Hy- dro increased its rates due to falling revenues, costs of start- ing up new facilities and a need to maintain existing services. @ PARA PAINTS & COATINGS "The commission is happy to be able to hold the increase to Scugog customers at the same rate as what is being passed on by Ontario Hydro," Mr. Smith said. Despite the average increase of 8.22 per cent, Mr. Smith says it is a lot better than most com- missions. In fact, Scugog is one of the 10 per cent lowest in the area. "When we can stay in that lowest group, we can't com- plain." Mr. Smith says the commis- sion has no major projects planned for next year other than preventive maintenance to upgrade and continue the level of service. But Scugeg Hydro has just completed a major project which saw the replacement of more than 600 street light with energy-efficient bulbs. Terry Adderley, manager of Scugog Hydro, says the Street Smart program will save the Township of Scugog approxi- mately $23,750in 1993. The program, which began in Seagrave last April and ended recently in Port Perry, replaced 618 street light fixtures. It is es- timated the township will re- coup the costs of the project in less than 10 years.. CENTRAL PAINT & WALLPAPER 205 Ritson Rd. S..
