Christmas begins Nov. 30 In downtown Port Perry By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Holiday shoppers can expect a "Dickens of a Christmas" in downtown Port Perry this De- cember. The BIA (Business Improve- ment Area) will be kicking off'its Christmas theme by entering its first-ever float in the Scugog Chamber of Commerce Santa Claus Parade on\Saturday, No- vember 28. There are many events planned for the month of De- cember on the downtown streets. Horse and buggy rides will be offered through the BIA district during weekends in December. Keeping with the English theme, Tom Doran will be offer- ing treats of roasted chestnuts and warmed cashews in front of the post office. erchants will be displaying old photos of Port Perry in their windows as a continuation of Peter Perry Days. These photos have all been supplied by Scu- gog Shores Museum Village. The merchants themselves will be holding a window display contest. This tree lighting ceremony also marks the return of Santa's house. Beginning December 4 Santa will be at his Queen Street home on Thursdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. until 56 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.- noon and 1-4 p.m. The BIA is also trying to round up service groups and or- ganizations to sing Christmas carols on the streets during the month. Anyone interested or anyone with suitable costumes is asked to call Sharon MacKin- non at 985-8902. To entice visitors to shop downtown Port Perry this year, the BIA will be running a com- mercial on CHEX Television this year. The BIA will also be booking radio spots. The commercial, which will be shot on November 23 in front of the Port Perry Post Office will ~ feature the BIA float, carollers, horses and buggies and Old Fa- ther Time.
