I guess it's just human nature to sit back while someone else does a lot of hard work arrang- ing a project like this one. And then complain endlessly about the way it was done. If they wanted it done differently why didn't they arrange it? Maybe the arrangements didn't follow procedure by some peoples' standards but, whether they like it or not, these signs are up. Some people are complaining about them but what is the solu- tion? Tear them down! How childish!! I for one am thrilled to see these signs every time I pass one. What an impression the old signs must have made! After 14 years they were weather beaten and had become very cluttered and tacky looking. I never really noticed too many signs or notices on them be- cause it was impossible to focus on one area - everything just seemed to clump together. We, as taxpayers, business people and service organiza- tions, have gone to great trouble to improve the image of Port Perry and the Township of Scu- gog for tourism, which carries a lot of the businesses that sup- port our town. Should we not carry that through to the en- trance signs as well? Where there is any new im- provement there has to be mon- ey to pay for them. The normal avenue is to hit the taxpayers first. I am glad that for once the taxpayers have been given a break. It is unfortunate that the service clubs have had to carry the brunt of the financing but someone has to. For years many of us taxpayers have supported the service clubs in many ways, financially, physically and emo- tionally! Yes, the service clubs SPP PPP P- a8 . I guess this is one way for the groups to thank the community for their years of support. Be- cause of them, the entrance to Port Perry has been given a much needed face lift and for that we are very grateful - THANKYOU! In regard to the Kinsmen let- ter, there were a lot of valid points raised. My question is "Did anyone make a sincere ef- fort to get answers to all of your questions?" The letter that went out to all of the service or- ganizations from the township, dated Sept. 28, 1992, contained two names and phone numbers for further information. Did anyone sincerely contact any- one for true facts or answers? If not then I guess you made your decision on heresay which is a grave injustice not only to your- selves but to everyone who read your letter. They were right when they said that Service Organizations are a valuable community re- source. But so is community spirit. And we have been lack- ing in the latter which was quite evident during a few events that were organized last spring and summer of 1992. Doesn't everyone feel better af- ter a new outfit has been pur- chased or some much needed redecorating was done. Any Urgen To the Editor: This letter is one way we, the people of Immaculate Concep- tion and St. Bernadette's par- ishes in Port Perry and Nestle- ton, are expressing our concern about pornography. We live today in an age of openness never before experi- enced in history. Although, of it- self this openness is a good thing, for we are not advocating a return to the times of close- mindedness, we feel, with open- ness, must come responsibility. We, as caring and concerned communities, speak out against the never ending stream of por- nography infiltrating our socie- ty through television, movies, videos and books. These, all un- der the guise of so-called "self- expression" create the danger being passed on to our children, and to adults, of desensitizing us to all acts of sexual abuse. As people become accustomed to the so-called "soft porn," it is a gradual acceptance of other forms of "hard core" pornogra- phy. It is with great urgency new improvement to boost com- munity spirit and pride certain- ly can't hurt! As for the economy and spending money at this time, is it not necessary for the econo- my to start recovering we need to put money back into the com- munity. And as for the bird that has caused so much contro- versy, has anyone really no- ticed the poor thing on the sign. I know myself, I'm too busy ad- miring the sign itself, the ser- vice clubs' signs that look so nice and bright and the an- nouncement board. As for the exit message, it is my understanding that it also is part of another organizations service and they have been around much longer than the Kinsmen. So much for authen- ticity and ownership. Good job itisn't copyrighted. I am very sorry that the Kins- men have decided against sup- porting the sign. That upsets me a great deal. I am constant- ly being asked to support ser- vice organizations and if I can't do it financially, I do it with my time. Time and effort has always been and always will be pre- cious to the service organiza- tion's future, just as their com- mitment and community spirit would have been precious to us. Sincerely, Pamela Wanamaker. appeal that we appeal to you to strengthen the Criminal Code in regard to all forms of pornog- raphy, from which many crime sources derive their capital. We urge stronger guidelines con- cerning the ratings, distribu- tion and display of all such ma- terial. Many of us have watched as this disease has taken hold within our communities, and have failed to speak out because of the labelling with which we are often branded. We feel we must appeal to all our good citi- zens to open our eyes to the ef- fects of pornography on our soci- ety.
